University wins defence contract

The University of Bradford's Department of Peace Studies has won a £650,000 Government contract to provide short courses to officers of the British Armed Forces.

Some 600 officers will be trained over the next five years as part of the Ministry of Defence contract, with the first courses starting in October 2004.

The contract will be managed by the Department's Centre for International Cooperation and Security (CICS) and delivered by the University's leading international experts in four key areas. These are:

  • African Security and Peacekeeping in Complex Political Emergencies
  • Terrorism: Causes, Trends and Responses
  • Conflict Resolution
  • European Security

Head of the Department of Peace Studies Dr Shaun Gregory said: "We are very proud to have won this contract and it shows that our work here in Peace Studies is being taken increasingly seriously by Government.

"These days the military spend less of their time winning wars and more time winning peace - this important training will help them achieve this."

CICS was launched in summer 2002 to deliver high-level research consultancy and policy advice to Government and other bodies. Issues covered have included arms exports and research into the links between poverty and armed violence.

CICS has also been asked to evaluate a number of current Governmental conflict prevention programmes.
