The University of Bradford’s Eye Clinic will host a visit from local MP Marsha Singh this week, Friday 4 November 2005.

Mr Singh is visiting the clinic to raise awareness of the value that the University’s training of future optometrists represents, and also to remind members of the public to get their eyes checked regularly.

The University’s Eye Clinic provides full optometric services (comprehensive eye examinations, spectacles, contact lenses etc.) throughout the year for staff and students of the University of Bradford - and for members of the public. Services are provided by final year students under staff supervision.

David Whitaker, Professor of Vision Science at the University of Bradford, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Marsha to the Eye Clinic so he can see first hand the contribution that optometrists make to eye care in the community.

“We oversee many excellent students through their training, but they need to be able to work with real people. So we’re inviting members of the public who would be happy to be seen by one of our final year students to make an appointment with us.”

On visiting the Eye Clinic, Marsha Singh MP, said: “As I suffer from diabetes, it’s important that I get my eyes checked regularly.

“Diabetics like me can suffer from a condition called Diabetic Retinopathy, which basically means leaky blood vessels in the back of the eyes. This is the most common cause of blindness in people of a working age in this country, but it is treatable and hence why it’s important to get your eyes checked.”
