Advance information for International Students |
Note: a separate accommodation brochure is also available on the WWW.
You will be guaranteed a place in University residential accommodation for your first year at Bradford if you are a first-year undergraduate student or a second-year direct entry international student (provided you apply on the appropriate form).
University residential accommodation will be offered to all first-year undergraduates and (where possible) all international (full fee) postgraduate students registering at the beginning of the academic session. To ensure this, your application for accommodation must be received at the latest by 31 August.
It may also be possible to offer University residential accommodation to first-year international research students registering at other times.
Undergraduate students should receive an application form for University accommodation from their course admission tutor. Postgraduate students will receive their application form from Student Registry, together with the offer of a place. These forms are contained within a special 'student accommodation booklet', giving full details on each Hall. If you have not received a form by the time you want to apply for accommodation, contact the Halls of Residence Office by letter, phone, fax or email. Or visit our website at http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/recruitment/accom/ to download our application form.
You should submit your completed application form as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to offer couples or families accommodation in Halls, but assistance is available in finding private accommodation. See below for advice on bringing your family.
All Halls are self-catered
Revis Barber Hall and Dennis Bellamy Hall together accommodate 317 students. They are situated about one kilometre from the University. The accommodation is in the form of single study-bedrooms. The charge for residence in these two Halls in 1999-2000 was £43.00.
There are places for 250 students in Trinity Hall, which offers single study-bedrooms, 91 of which have en-suite toilet/shower facilities. The charge for residence in 1999-2000 was £46.06 (£57.75 for en-suite rooms).
Charles Morris Hall provides approximately 50 single places for final-year undergraduates. In 1999-2000 the weekly charge was £48.58.
All Saints Hall provides 88 single en-suite rooms for postgraduate students. The weekly charge was £57.75 in 1999-2000.
University Hall and Bradford Hall, which together provide approximately 265 study- bedrooms, are situated on the main campus. There is a kitchen/dining room on each floor, in which students may make their own meals. For 1999-2000 the weekly charge for residence in these Halls was £37.87.
Shearbridge Green Hall, Longside Hall and Kirkstone Hall are also on the main campus. They provide accommodation in single study-bedrooms for approximately 930 students. There are two kitchens in each block, housing 24 or 25 students. The charge per week for 1999-2000 was £40.40.
Vernon Barnby Hall, situated at the Management Centre, provides 25 rooms with en-suite facilities for postgraduate students based there. In 1999-2000 the charge was £57.75 per week.
These residences provide self-catering accommodation in single study-bedrooms, primarily for students pursuing courses at the School of Health Studies. The charge in 1999-2000 was £39.06 per week.
The charges for all Halls include heating and lighting.
There is a wide choice of privately-rented accommodation available in Bradford. In 2000, a typical rent for a single student having one room in a house shared with other students varied between £25 and £40 per week. The difference in cost between University and privately-rented accommodation may often be less than it seems, since items such as lighting or heating are usually charged as 'extras' in houses or flats, and can prove expensive. However, rented accommodation in Bradford is amongst the cheapest in Britain, and is easier to obtain (and often closer to the University) than in most other university towns and cities.
To help you to find suitable privately-rented accommodation, the Private Accommodation Office maintains a list of flats, bed-sitters and furnished houses available in the city. We also give advice on renting procedures, tenancy agreements, and the responsibilities of tenants and landlords. Remember that you will need to come to Bradford personally, at least one week before your studies begin, and preferably earlier, to make your arrangements for non-University accommodation.
The University does not have any accommodation for families or married couples. It may be difficult for you to find suitable accommodation if your spouse and family accompany you when you arrive. We strongly advise you to come to Britain alone first, and only bring your family once you have found suitable accommodation and got yourself settled.
If you come to Bradford on your own, before the start of term, then the University's Private Accommodation Office will help you find suitable accommodation in the city. It may be possible to provide temporary University accommodation for you while you look for something suitable.
Please Note:
If you wish to stay in University
accommodation on a temporary basis before the start of term you should
write direct to the Accommodation Office with your request. You
should not complete the University's standard application form for a
place in Halls. The accommodation form should only be completed if
you intend to stay in Halls for the complete academic year, or, if you
are a short course or exchange student, for the duration of your stay
at the University.
