Health care for people in Bradford has been backed by a new professorship, based at the University, which will strengthen the work of the new primary care groups (PCGs), funded to the tune of £500,000 over five years.
Professor Neil Small of the School of Health Studies occupies the chair in community and primary care, created jointly by the University, Bradford Health Authority and the Bradford Community NHS Trust, with the backing of the research and development directorate at the Northern and Yorkshire Regional Office of the NHS Executive.
Professor Small will be asked to contribute an independent view in the development of innovative health services for the district. Major responsibilities of his new role include leading on community and primary-care research, attracting funding for research projects and working closely with partners on the strategic planning of community and primary-care services.
Professor Jeff Lucas, head of the School of Health Studies, said: "Neil Small's appointment brings academic leadership to the emerging world of primary-care research. It is timely that we can combine his expertise into both the birth of PCGs and the ongoing agenda of a health action zone for Bradford."
