The University is leading a three-year evaluation of the Health Action Zone (HAZ) which covers the Bradford Metropolitan District.
Bradford is one of 26 HAZs which have been established by the Department of Health across the UK. Their overall aim is to reduce inequalities and improve health in deprived areas.
The evaluation which the University is undertaking aims not just to look at the outcomes of projects and the overall impact of the HAZ in Bradford: Annual Report 2000: it also aims to develop a culture of evaluative thinking in the health service and to learn over the long term what practices work, for whom in the health service and among its partners, and in what settings.
Several University Departments are involved in the evaluation: the School of Health Studies, Applied Social Sciences, the Management Centre, Optometry and Pharmacy. The evaluation team (Professor Jeff Lucas, Dr Janet Henderson and Alison Torn at the School of Health Studies) has so far commissioned evaluation support in over 200 projects.
Further funding is being allocated from Bradford Health Authority's successful bids to the Department of Health's initiatives to help people stop smoking and taking drugs. Money is also coming from a major Inner City Primary Care Group bid to the national HAZ Innovations Fund to address ill health and social exclusion in the deprived areas of inner-city Bradford.
The evaluation team is collaborating with the national HAZ evaluation team on two projects: the development of effective partnerships, based at the Health Education Authority, and community involvement, based at the University of Birmingham.
