Robot Wars picture.August 2000

  • New Pro-Chancellor Barbara France, former lay member of the University of Bradford Council since 1991, was appointed Pro-Chancellor.
  • Robot Wars Live Exhibition The University's renowned Cybernetics Department took part in Robot Wars as part of a new recruitment drive.
  • Sad Loss of University Pro-Chancellor Long-standing and much respected member of the University of Bradford Council, John Stanley Bell, former Pro-Chancellor and Honorary Graduate of the University, passed away aged 74. The newly refurbished D4 lecture theatre was renamed in his honour in July 2001.

  • Kick Off For New Artificial Turf Pitches New facilities costing £384k, supported by the Sport Lottery Fund, were officially opened at the University's Laisteridge Lane site. The pitches are also open to the public, schools and community groups.
  • West Yorkshire University Alliance The University of Bradford and Leeds Metropolitan University officially joined forces in a new alliance designed to build on the strengths of the two universities and help expand educational opportunities across the region.

October 2000

  • World First Data Protection Commissioner Elizabeth France launched the world's first Internet law degree at the University. The course, entitled Internet, Law and Society, is being jointly run by the School of Informatics at the University and Bradford Law School.
  • Award of Excellence The School of Pharmacy became the first academic department to receive a University of Bradford internal award of excellence in recognition of its commitment in working towards Investors in People.
  • Top Marks for IHS Interdisciplinary Human Studies (IHS) was awarded top marks by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education's Subject Review, making it the first philosophy course in the country to be given 24 points out of 24.
  • House of Lords Event A joint event focusing on a string of innovative health initiatives by the University's School of Health Studies and the School of Life Sciences, was the focus of this prestigious event, hosted by Baroness Lockwood, University Chancellor.

November 2000

  • Staff involved in the new Foundation degrees.The Big Week The 7th International Corporate Branding Symposium formed part of a week of activities, which included a major conference on Business Excellence in Yorkshire, a Chartered Institute of Marketing conference held at the University's Management Centre.
  • Foundation for Success The University teamed up with the University of Huddersfield and Leeds Metropolitan University to win £450k from the Higher Education Funding Council to run new foundation degrees, vocationally orientated qualifications delivered over two years full time (or part-time equivalent). Bradford will deliver foundation degrees in health and social care.
  • New Dean of Students Adrian Pearce was appointed as the University's first Dean of Students. His role supports the University's strong commitment to developing student-led, quality- focused services for all those studying here.
  • Accolade for Big Noise Professor of Environmental Acoustics, David Hothersall, was presented with a prestigious national award for this research and teaching work on the reduction of sound pollution. The R.W.B. Stephens Medal was presented by the Institute of Acoustics.
  • Regeneration Visit Regeneration expert Bill Maynard of award-winning property development company Urban Splash delivered a special presentation at the University on plans to redevelop Lister's Mill. The event was arranged by the University's new Business Development team.
  • Rotary International Visit Guests from Rotary International visited the University to discuss a new £1m project following the University's successful bid to become one of only seven universities in the world to run special postgraduate courses in conflict resolution, funded by Rotary International.
  • Plans To Train More Doctors Unveiled Plans by the University of Bradford, the University of Leeds and the NHS to train more doctors in Yorkshire through opening up extra opportunities for students from deprived or culturally-diverse communities were unveiled for the first time.

  • Bronze Age Conference The Department of Archaeological Sciences hosted a major international conference examining all aspects of life in the Bronze Age.
  • Community Workers Given Help with Regeneration The University launched its new Diploma in Community Development and Regeneration in response to demand for part-time provision to support community workers and residents in regeneration areas.
  • Participants at the Cadaver Dog conference.Professional Doctorates in Pharmacy The University's School of Pharmacy expanded its partnership with the Airedale, Leeds and Sheffield NHS Trusts to launch one of Europe's first professional doctorates in Pharmacy.
  • Teaching Accolade Dr Richard Bowen of the Department of Chemical and Forensic Sciences was awarded a prestigious Royal Society of Chemistry Education Division Higher Education Award in recognition of his excellent teaching practice.
  • Lord Sainsbury Visit Minister for Science, Lord Sainsbury of Turville, visited the Electronics Yorkshire Centre of Excellence to talk about the benefits of cluster funding and networks. The project is a partner of the Electronics Yorkshire Association, part of the University's Department of Business Services and Regional Development.
  • Cadaver Dog Conference Trained police dogs and their handlers travelled from Europe and North America to take part at the third International Cadaver Dog workshop hosted at the University by the Forensic Search Advisory Group. It was the first time that the dogs, used by police to recover bodies, were able to train in the UK after the relaxation of quarantine regulations.
  • Graduation Ceremony David Bailey, Lord Melvyn Bragg, Lord Brian Rix, Lord George Robertson, Margaret Hollis, and Doreen and Neville Lawrence were honoured alongside more than 1, 750 graduates of both the University and the College at a special graduation ceremony held at the University.

  • University Wins Funding for Guidance The University became one of the first in the country to win a contract to fund education guidance, information and advice for local people via an initiative spear-headed by the Centre for Continuing Education.
  • Dementia Conference Experts from across Europe and the United States attended a two-day conference at the University on 'Maximising the Effectiveness of Dementia Care Mapping'.
  • Ali Joins Prestigious Television Committee University of Bradford graduate Ali Rashid, now a visiting Fellow at the University, was invited to join the Executive Committee of the prestigious Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival.
  • Chris Hoggett and the 'Peace' Sculpture.Electronics Yorkshire Association Signing The University of Bradford and Leeds Metropolitan University signed a joint agreement to collaborate in the delivery of services to the region's electronics industries through the Electronics Yorkshire Association.
  • Financial Times Survey Results The University's Management Centre became one of only 15 UK business schools to make it into the Financial Times top 100 world-class business schools.
  • Clare Short Visit The Secretary of State for International Development, Clare Short, delivered a talk on 'Globalisation and Poverty' at the University, organised by the University's Development and Project Planning Centre.
  • AGT International Contract University spin-off company Advanced Gel Technology (AGT) signed a major contract with Canadian oil and gas company Aqueolic within days of gaining an international patent for its unique 'wonder gel' technology.
  • Sustainability Collection Unveiled Chief Executive of Universities UK, Baroness Warwick of Undercliffe, officially opened the Bradford and District Sustainability Collection at the University's J.B. Priestley Library. The collection includes a range of material around sustainability issues including reports, books, and other material.
  • Martin Wainwright Joins University Council Northern Editor of The Guardian, Martin Wainwright MBE, joined the University as a co-opted member of the University Council.
  • Painter Unveils Peace Sculpture Sculptor and professional painter Chris Hoggett unveiled the sculpture 'Peace' at the University's J.B. Priestley Library.

February 2001

  • Professor Diana Anderson and Professor Val Randall .Top Marks for Peace Studies The University's world-renowned Department of Peace Studies was awarded top marks - 24 out of 24 - for its teaching quality. It was the sixth consecutive Department at the University to receive an 'excellent' score in the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) Subject Review.
  • Female Professors Appointed Two new female Professors, Diana Anderson and Val Randall, were appointed by the University, bringing the total of female professors at the University to seven.
  • Electronics Yorkshire Association Launched The University helped officially launch the Electronics Yorkshire Association with a high-profile event. The Association is a European Funded organisation, which is part of the University's Department of Business Services and Regional Development. Its aim is to help grow and strengthen the region's electronics industry.
  • University Builds on Closer Ties with College The University and Bradford College won funding to extend a restructuring and collaboration project for a further year via the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

March 2001

  • Success for Medical Bid The University's joint bid with the University of Leeds and the NHS to train more medical students was successful with funding secured for 40 additional places.
  • Course First for Bradford The University became the first institution in the country to offer a Master's degree in local sustainable development in developing countries with the launch of a brand new course organised jointly by the Department of Environmental Science and the Development and Project Planning Centre.
  • New International Office Head Dr Haydn Bartlett was appointed as Head of the International Office with responsibility for international recruitment.
  • Million-Dollar Sale for Bradford Particle Design Ground-breaking pharmaceutical firm and University of Bradford spin-off company Bradford Particle Design (BPD) was sold to an American firm for $200m.
  • House of Lords Event The University's School of Archaeological and Environmental Sciences showcased its research and other work at a special event at the House of Lords hosted by Baroness Lockwood.

  • Investors Status The School of Health Studies successfully maintained its Investors in People status following a detailed external audit. The School was the first area within the University to achieve an Investors in People award, first attained in 1997.
  • Media on the Move The University's School of Informatics organised a four-day international symposium on behalf of the British Computer Society Computer Graphics and Displays Group which attracted experts in digital media from across the globe.

May 2001

  • Rachael Joyce.Bradford Economist Makes the Charts University of Bradford economist Dr Samuel Cameron was ranked 140th in the top 500 economists in the world in an independent study funded by the European Economics Association.
  • Student Wins National Award University of Bradford Mechanical and Medical Engineering student Rachael Joyce was selected as one of 30 of the UK's most exceptional engineering students by the Royal Academy of Engineering. She was invited to join the Academy's Engineering Leadership Awards programme and was awarded £7,500 over three years to accelerate her personal and professional development.
  • Pioneering Link with the United Arab Emirates The University's Centre for Total Quality Management formed a link with one of the world's top oil producers to securing the first lectureship of its kind with the company. The link, with the Abu Dhabi Company for the Onshore Oil Operations (ADCO) will fund a University lecturer to teach Total Quality Management to the globally recognised company.
  • Adult Learners Award Mature student Angela Brook, a student at the University's Centre for Continuing Education, was awarded an individual Adult Learners' Award for the Yorkshire and Humberside Region.
  • Top Troubleshooter Visits University Internationally respected businessman and ex-Chancellor of the University, Sir John Harvey-Jones, visited the University of Bradford's MBA Alumni Association before addressing business leaders at a talk at the University organised by the Institute of Financial Services.

June 2001

  • University School of Management Launched An event to mark the official launch of the new Bradford University School of Management (formerly Bradford Management Centre) was attended by guests from across the UK. The event included a prestige lecture from Professor Stephen R. Watson, Principal of Henley Management College, together with a tree planting and time-capsule ceremony.
  • Cricket.Texting Success Peace Studies student Hetty Hughes won first prize in the The Guardian's text messaging competition with a poem inspired by her grandmother. She beat 7,500 other contestants and won a £1,000 prize.
  • Cricketing Centre of Excellence Goes Head to Head with Yorkshire Students from the Bradford/Leeds Universities Cricketing Centre of Excellence faced Yorkshire County Cricket Club with a 3-day match at Park Avenue, Bradford.
  • £1.5m Laboratory Opening Yorkshire Cancer Research (YCR) opened its new state-of-the-art research facility at the University of Bradford followed by a prestige evening lecture given by Professor Terry Jenkins. YCR will provide £1.5m to the University over the next five years to fund staff, building and research costs in the battle against cancer.
  • New Master's Programme A new part-time Master of Education programme designed for working graduates was launched by the University's Teaching Quality Enhancement Group. The part-time distance learning programme in Training and Development is aimed at those working in education, training, personnel or development.
  • New Vice-Chancellor Appointed Professor Christopher Taylor, former Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Leeds, was appointed as the University's new Vice-Chancellor.

July 2001

  • Lord Bishop of Bradford and the Lord Mayor of Bradford.Graduation Ceremony The Rt. Rev. David Smith, Lord Bishop of Bradford; Lord MacLaurin of Knebworth DL, David Anderson, Adam Hart-Davis, Professor Sir David Smith, Professor Robert Worcester and Frank J.T.Fildes were honoured alongside more than 1, 800 graduates of the University at the summer graduation ceremony.
  • Junior University Fifty youngsters from across the region took part in a range of activities during a week-long Summer Programme organised by the Junior University. The Junior University makes University facilities available to young people over the age of 13 who are studying for GCSE and Advanced level examinations.
  • New Cancer Research Facilities Opened New hi-tech cancer research laboratories funded by The Cancer Research Campaign (CRC) were officially opened at the University. Built with a cash injection of £900,000 donated jointly by CRC and the University, the building, containing six new laboratories plus offices and meeting rooms, will host a cutting-edge programme of anticancer drug discovery and will be supported by more than £4.5 million given by CRC over the next five years.
