P-V-C Appointment
Professor Grace Alderson was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Resources)
taking responsibility for matters covering planning and budgeting for
all staff and non-staff resources, and the estate, for a period of 3 years,
to 31 July 2004.
Marie Curie Recognition
The University of Bradford won three EU awards for advanced training of
researchers through the EU Marie Curie Programme. The Department of European
Studies and the Department of Archaeological Sciences were awarded £112,000
and £72,000 respectively as Marie Curie Research Training Sites, to provide
a period of specialised training for PhD students from the EU and applicant
states.
Industrialists
Visit Twenty-four industrialists from the Guangdong Province Textile Association,
People's Republic of China, visited the Centre for Objective Measurement
and Innovation Technologies (COMIT) in the University's Department of
Industrial Technology as part of a fact-finding tour.
External Evaluator
The University's Education Evaluation and Research Unit was appointed
to act as external evaluators for the South Bradford Education Action
Zone's programmes.
India Graduation
The University held its third consecutive graduation ceremony in New Delhi,
India, for over 100 students studying for a University of Bradford degree
in business and management in connection with partners, Institute of Integrated
Learning in Management.
Bacteria Named
American scientists gave an unusual honour to a University of Bradford
Professor by naming a group (genus) of bacteria after him. The new name
- Crossiella - was chosen by staff in the US Department of Agriculture
in recognition of the long-standing scientific contributions of Professor
Tom Cross, a distinguished actinomycete biologist at the University.
Text Messaging
The University became the first UK Higher Education institution to use
text messaging to support its recruitment activity. The initiative subsequently
received a number of prestigious marketing awards.
