If you find yourself in financial hardship the main advice we can give you is don't keep it to yourself. There are many ways in which help can be given. Both the Student Information Service and the Students' Union can give assistance and advice regarding the best course of action to take.

Several funds are administered by Student Information Service although advice can also be obtained from the Students Union.

1) Hardship Funds - for full (and some) part-time students registered for undergraduate or postgraduate courses.
The regulations change each year but if you are in hardship, if you have dependants, or are entering higher education from care you should make an application or make an appointment to see the administrator of the fund (S.I.S.) or one of the Students' Union Advice workers.
N.B. This fund is only available to home students. You should have applied for the full student loan and the hardship loan (where eligible). Please do not feel this is not for you, if you want further details ask S.I.S. or the Students' Union.
2) Hardship Loans
Students beginning their course after the academic year 1998-1999 must apply for this extra student loan prior to application for other funding.
N.B. This fund is only available to home students.
3) Elizabeth Howard Trust
This is a small amount of money from a trust fund for grants or loans for women students in financial difficulty. You are eligible to apply if you are registered as an undergraduate or postgraduate student and have experienced difficulties since embarking on your course that you could not have foreseen.
4) Financial Relief Fund
This is a small fund to be allocated as interest free loans to students suffering from hardship which has arisen since embarking on the course.
This University fund was set up primarily for International Students, but those able to apply are all full-time undergraduate or postgraduate students.

For all these funds application forms and advice can be obtained from Student Information Service

For these funds supporting evidence is needed without which the application cannot be considered. Therefore hold on to all bank statements, proof of rent (lease, rent book etc) credit agreement from The Student Loan Company, any award, pay slips etc, receipts of equipment and unusual expenditure.

If at the beginning of the academic year your funding has not arrived for whatever reason, and you find yourself without money, please come to Student Information Service a short term loan may be arranged for you.

Debt: If you have large debts with rent or public utilities call for advice to the Students' Union Advice Centre.
