Our Mission

John and Elnora Ferguson Centre for African Studies is an integral part of the University of Bradford's world renowned Peace Studies Department. With strategic support from the Allan and Nesta Ferguson Trust, the Centre offers a forward-looking environment where academics, researchers, students and public and private sector entities come to gain and share knowledge of contemporary African issues - with a specific focus on education for peace, conflict and human security studies. The Centre's mission is:

  • To promote policy relevant and action oriented research for shaping international and domestic discourse on African peace, security and development issues;
  • To promote knowledge of the pivotal role of African organizations, agencies and civil society organizations in conflict prevention, management and resolution;
  • To build partnerships for the advancement of durable peace and human security through the development and integration of context-specific Peace and Conflict Study programmes and course modules into the curricula of partner universities and specialized institutions (including military and police academies) on the African continent;
  • To function as a national and international centre of excellence in African issues with specific focus on: security consequences of economic marginalization (poverty), the impact of HIV/ AIDS on governance (including state stability), gender and development and the plight of vulnerable groups (such as children, migrants and religious groups) in conditions of conflict and insecurity.
