New buildings – new era

It's been an exciting few months on the University's campuses with new buildings being completed and others nearing completion. Here is an update on the multi-million pound work taking place.

New building at Emm Lane now open

Inside the learning resource centre

The School of Management has completed the development of its Emm Lane site in an exciting and innovative way to join together a number of the current buildings and provide new, state-of-the-art learning resources at the heart of the integrated structure.

Dean of the School, Professor Arthur Francis, said: "The student experience is at the forefront of our thinking regarding the planning and design of the new building. We want everyone who works here - staff and students alike - to have first class facilities within a physical space that melds the best of historic Victorian and modern architecture into an interconnected space where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts."

The new building for the Emm Lane area of the campus:

  • Provides leading MBA teaching facilities
  • Provides a centralised resource centre and library
  • Integrates the law library with the business and management library
  • Provides new teaching and office space
  • Improves staff facilities, and
  • Creates a new atrium space for eating, drinking, socialising and working as the focal point of the whole campus

Alumni of the School of Management are invited to attend a weekend event on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th of May 2010, which will include a tour of the new learning resource centre. For more information see item under "News from the Academic Schools - School of Management" below, or visit www.bradford.ac.uk/management/alumni/events/alumniweekend/

It’s Student Central!

Student Central
Vision of inside Student Central

A name has been announced for the new Communal Building: Student Central.

The Communal Building facilities are being completely refurbished and extended to create an attractive, modern and interactive space fit for all the Students' Union facilities. The project includes the introduction of a new glazed roof over the central courtyard to create an additional 1000m² of internal space and a glazed link to the J B Priestley Library building.

The 'learning atrium' will provide a flexible space to house a mixture of new and exciting student-led activities. The Students' Union services arranged around the atrium will be an open, accessible space.

New seminar/teaching rooms will open onto a freely accessible study area overlooking the atrium; a range of student support services will have direct easy access from this space.

One of the floors of the building will retain its function as the 'entertainment floor' with new bars and revamped venue space including stage, dance floor and DJ booth.

School of Health Studies on the move

The School of Health Studies will be moving to the University’s city campus in Autumn 2011. The School’s new building will encompass the existing Horton A Building (facing onto Great Horton Road), and will also include a purpose-built extension. The excellent new facilities will include state-of-the-art clinical skills rooms, as well as staff and student areas. For more information visit www.bradford.ac.uk/health/newbuilding

UAE Navy presents gift to University

UAE Navy presents gift to University

During the December award ceremonies two graduates presented a gift to Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark Cleary on behalf of their organisation.

The students, from the United Arab Emirates Navy, brought the gift to their ceremony on behalf of the Navy after returning home and sharing their experiences about their time at the University.

The gift is considered one of the highest levels of gift to be given by the UAE Navy to another Navy or institution that it feels has helped its staff in gaining knowledge that will enable them to improve in their field of work.

Ahmad Mohammad Salem Alhassan said: "We wanted to show our appreciation to the University and the staff. We had a very good time learning at the University and we never felt that we were away from home. The staff at the University really value the international students and understand their needs. The School of Engineering, Design and Technology was very encouraging and they always tried to help with our study and, if needed, personal things."

Easa Hasan Mohammed Alsabab Altenaiji said: "The University logo 'Making Knowledge Work' was one of the reasons I applied to study. The city of Bradford was very welcoming and the people are very friendly."

Fundraising campaign raises over £70k

Student Callers

Student callers, Akhtar Munir, a first-year student on the BSc Information and Communications Technologies degree and Judith Imholt, a second-year Peace Studies BA student, chatting to Alumni

The University's first alumni fundraising campaign has raised over £70,000 in donations.

A month-long telethon was held to raise money for The Braduate Fund - created to help improve the student experience and support services, provide scholarships for talented students in need, and hardship funds for students struggling financially.

Run during the evenings and weekends in February and March, the campaign saw 38 current students call alumni to catch up on life at the University and ask for their support.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark Cleary, said: "I am absolutely delighted that we have raised so much, this money will make a real difference to students. I must say a huge thank you to all our alumni who gave so generously. I have been so heartened to hear the stories of how our graduates are doing and the impact that their time here at the University has had on their lives. Thank you also to our student callers, who worked very hard to gain the support of our alumni, and did a really fantastic job."

During the telethon the student callers spoke to 1,680 graduates and £73,143 was raised in total, made up of one-off gifts and monthly pledges over the next five years. In addition, Matched Funding (a scheme where university donations are matched by the Government at the rate of 50p in the pound) will be claimed on donations made before August 2011.

To find out more about the Braduate Fund, listen to a message from the Vice-Chancellor, or to take the opportunity to support Bradford students visit www.bradford.ac.uk/giving-to-bradford/make-a-difference/the-braduate-fund/.

The Development Office

So much has happened in recent months and we've been delighted with the warmth and support that our graduates have shown towards our efforts to raise money in support of Bradford's students.

The hugely successful launch of The Braduate Fund gave us a chance to find out directly from alumni where you would like to direct your support, be it hardship funding, scholarships, or simply to be used wherever the need is greatest. We are so very grateful to everyone who took the time to let us have their views or who made a donation and we will report back in future newsletters how your generosity has made a real difference here at Bradford.

In addition, we've had some wonderful feedback about our new web pages telling people how they can get involved, pledge a gift, hear first hand from a current student how a scholarship has changed their life, or just get in touch with the Development Office and find out more; if you've not yet visited www.bradford.ac.uk/giving-to-bradford, take a look and let us know what you think!

Giving to Bradford University

We've also had requests for information from people who wish to leave a gift to the University in their will and therefore we will soon be launching a brand new brochure explaining how you could make a very real difference to the University after your death, perhaps by funding a scholarship in your name or that of a loved one or leaving a gift to your old Department. If you would like to know more about legacy gifts and receive a copy of the new brochure, or if you have already made provision in your will and would like to let us know, please call Carol Vickers on 01274 236493 or email giving@bradford.ac.uk.

Many thanks to all those people who have made a gift - we are hugely grateful for your support. If you could make a donation, please call 01274 236844 or email giving@bradford.ac.uk to discuss how you could change someone's life. Thank you.

School of Pharmacy - Class of 1970

Professor Peter Taylor and Jeff Pearse are organising a 40th anniversary reunion for class of ’70 Pharmacy graduates on Friday 30 July 2010. The plan is to meet at the University in the afternoon, tour the new Pharmacy Clinical Skills Suite and meet a few of the staff, then go for a meal and make a night of it.

Accommodation can be arranged for those wanting to stay over - we got a good deal at the last reunion 15 years ago.

If you would like to attend or would like more information please contact Peter on p.a.taylor3@bradford.ac.uk or Jeff on jeff.pearse@bradford.nhs.uk.

Reunion for 1989 Freshers

Simon Jarrold (Social Sciences 1992), is organising a reunion of all Bradford University Graduates who started their studies at the University in 1989 - 21 years ago. The date for the reunion is Saturday, 9th October 2010 starting at 19.30 and the venue is Weatherspoon's, The Sir Titus Salt on Morley Street.

As the kitchen at the pub is generally busy on a Saturday evening, nibbles only will be provided so you may wish to arrange your main meal of the day before or after the event.

Also there is a good possibility that we could have a tour of the University campus earlier in the day at about 15.00 if enough people are interested.

Partners are more than welcome to attend the reunion but unfortunately children aren't allowed in the pub on a Saturday evening.

If you would like more information or to come along please e-mail Simon who is co-ordinating the event and indicate how many people will be attending and whether you are interested in the afternoon tour. Simon’s email is simon.jarrold@virgin.net.

Update on Class of '69 Pharmacy Reunion in 2009

Update on Class of '69 Pharmacy Reunion in 2009

Seated: Noel Baumber, Prof Doug Kinghorn, Prof Brenda Costall, Diane Friend, Diane Fraser, Gill Davy. Standing Prof Ron Purkiss, Bryan Bloom, (Waiter in background), Howard Levick, Roger Skews, Angie Tilbury, Beverley Rouse, John Clarke, Diane Scott, Steve Willgress, Christine Edwards, Tessa Cross, Terry Rigby, Alastair Ferguson, John McCormick, Tom Wright.

A reunion of Bradford University pharmacy students took place over a week-end in late September 2009 and served as a celebration of 40 years since graduation. We stayed centrally at the Midland Hotel who were most accommodating in providing an evening meal, overnight stay and a Sunday lunch at a most modest cost. It was the first time that some of the attendees had met each other since their graduation although a similar week-end had been arranged some 20 years earlier. It was most interesting to note that although many of us had changed physically the characteristics and voices had not, allowing easier identification.

A most enjoyable evening meal was taken followed by a robust evening in the bar area (no change there) where stories of past university endeavours/glories and careers were exchanged into the late hours. The following day we were treated to a visit to the Pharmacy Department. This was a most exceptional event. How the Department had changed over the years was beyond belief and the course content more clinical. Laboratories with individual computers and video equipment to spare. We all returned amazed to the hotel for Sunday lunch and promised to try to attempt another event in 5 years time.

In Memoriam

Dr Michael (Mike) Gover 1939-2010

Dr Mike Gover passed away on 19 January 2010, aged 70 years, after a long illness.

Mike joined the University's Department of Mathematics as a lecturer in January 1966 and, having formally retired, continued teaching on a part-time basis right until a couple of years ago. He will be remembered by many graduates as a popular tutor, as well as a close friend of many staff and a highly-valued member of the academic community. During his career he taught thousands of students who benefited from the work of a gifted, enthusiastic and incredibly well-read lecturer.

Mike was never one to shy away from adventure, as exemplified by a three-day taxi ride during the rainy season towards Gilgit in the mountains of Pakistan on an ODA link project. His refreshingly candid views on life touched a great many of us, if for no other reason than the sheer humanity of his observations.

Enhancing manufacturing at BAE Systems

Over the next two years the University will be working with BAE Systems on three closely related Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) projects within their aircraft manufacturing facilities. From 2015 manufacturing rates will be significantly increased and it is this anticipated change in manufacturing volume which has prompted the Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. These projects were initiated by Dr Khurshid Khan, Senior Lecturer, School of Engineering, Design and Technology. The BAE Systems team will be led by Mark Gregory (Head of Manufacturing Shared Services) and coordinated by Steve Markham (Quality Manager - Strategy and Planning).

These three KTP projects are set within the "Manufacturing Failure Mode Avoidance (MFMA)" framework developed from the research of the University of Bradford's Automotive R&KT Centre.

Lost the car keys?

Research shows pregnancy can reduce memory

Dianne Farrar

Diane Farrar

Losing your car keys, forgetting what you are saying mid-sentence, putting things in the wrong place - these are all behaviours which have been long associated with being pregnant.

Now research from the University of Bradford has shown that spatial memory is adversely affected by pregnancy. Women in the final six months of pregnancy and for at least three months following birth had reduced ability when recalling previously seen locations.

PhD student Diane Farrar (pictured) tested two groups of women - one group who were pregnant and one who were not. She found that pregnant women performed significantly less well on tests designed to assess spatial memory.

Diane is currently studying endocrine pharmacology and conducted the research under the supervision of Professor Kay Marshall, Head of Pharmacy, Professor Jo Neill, Professor of Psychopharmacology at the University, and Professor Derek Tuffnell, obstetrician and gynaecologist at Bradford Royal Infirmary. The results have received widespread interest and have been reported nationally and internationally.

Diane said: "The research presented here shows that expectant mothers may experience reduced spatial memory ability and this persists for at least three months following birth. Questionnaire responses also indicate that during pregnancy women had significantly lower mood than the women who were not pregnant.

"Altered mood and increased anxiety, which may be due to altered hormone levels or pregnancy-related worries, may also adversely affect memory function. Mood and level of anxiety improved following pregnancy, but spatial memory remained reduced, suggesting hormonal influences may be responsible."

Former Shell executive appointed as new Dean

SOM New Dean

Bradford University School of Management has appointed a former international strategist from Shell as its new Dean. Dr Sarah Dixon, currently head of MSc programmes at the University of Bath, will join the School in September 2010 when Professor Arthur Francis retires.

Her appointment is seen as a public commitment to ensure the business relevance of the School - which ranks among the UK’s top ten business schools, as well as its continuing academic excellence and high ranking research.

Arthur Francis said: "Sarah Dixon has that rare mix of first-rate business experience with a successful transition into academia. Her career represents exactly what many bodies, including the Economic and Social Research Council and the Foundation for Management Education espouse, but so few have actually achieved. We are certain it will continue to strengthen our business relationships as well as encourage business people to look at developing academic careers."

Dr Dixon was first attracted to an academic career when she completed her MBA at Kingston University, subsequently joining them where she held a variety of roles, culminating in director of postgraduate programmes for the Faculty of Business and Law. Having gained a DBA from Henley Business School in the interim, she went on to intensify her research activity at the University of Bath where she took on the role of Head of MSc programmes.

Her business career at Royal Dutch Shell Group included petrochemicals business management in Vienna and Moscow and later positions in strategic planning and mergers & acquisitions in London. She moved into business consulting as director of the strategy consultancy, Albany Dixon Ltd.

Sarah Dixon said: "I am excited to be joining this top-ranking business school with its established reputation of excellence."

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships - your fast track to a successful career

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) involve recruiting high-quality graduates to work in companies, both large and small, normally for two years (the government has recently introduced shorter KTPs which are anything between 10 and 40 weeks, long), on technology transfer projects central to the needs and strategic development of a company. The project is jointly supervised by personnel in the company and the University.

Previous participants in KTP have enjoyed the benefits of:

  • Graduate employment opportunities with training
  • Accelerating their career in business
  • Experience of responsible employment with a competitive salary
  • Business-related training and personal development budget of £4,000

Vacancies for KTP Associates (graduates) arise throughout the year in a wide range of disciplines, business sectors and locations. Currently there are many hundreds of top graduates, who through Knowledge Transfer Partnerships are on fast tracks to high-profile careers in UK companies, see www.ktponline.org.uk (external link).
