Over 200 graduates attended reunion events in Brunei, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore during November 2009. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark Cleary, hosted the three events supported by the Deans and members of staff from the Schools of Engineering, Design & Technology, Life Sciences and Management.
In Brunei, HE Mr Rob Fenn, the British High Commissioner, came along to support the event, and a number of parents of current students attended and took the opportunity to talk to our graduates about their experiences whilst studying at Bradford.
Although the weather wasn't kind to us in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, this didn't dampen spirits and the graduates and special guests, including representatives from the British Council, enjoyed a presentation on the progress of the University by the Vice-Chancellor, a reception and buffet dinner.
Many thanks to all graduates who took time out of their busy lives to attend and we hope you enjoyed meeting up again with University staff members and your peers. The Alumni Office staff will be pleased to help you stay in touch.
Photographs from the events are on the alumni website can be found here.
Saida wins Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) Leadership Advanced Award.
Saida Khan, whilst a final-year electrical & electronic engineering student, was awarded a prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering Leadership Advanced Award.
Over 6,000 people requested application forms, but only 30 awards - worth £5,000 each - were made. "I chose to study at Bradford as it's my home town", said Saida, "and Bradford has a very good reputation for engineering."
These Leadership Awards help ambitious and inspiring engineering undergraduates, who want to become leadership role models for the next generation of engineers, to undertake an accelerated personal development programme. Recipients have the opportunity to acquire the skills needed to fulfil their potential, moving into engineering leadership positions in British industry soon after graduation.
Saida, who is currently doing a Master's at the University, was selected by NG Bailey for sponsorship while still a pupil at Bradford Grammar School.
Thank you to all graduates who completed our online survey. We are currently in the process of producing our Alumni Strategy for the next five years and the feedback received will be invaluable in informing that strategy. We have outlined some of the key findings here.
Graduates from the University of Bradford won three awards and collected a runner-up prize at the Royal Television Society (RTS) Yorkshire Student Awards in Leeds on Thursday 19 November. The RTS Student Awards offer the opportunity for talented media students across broadcast and audiovisual to showcase their work to some of the industry's biggest names. This year's winners also gain the superb prize of having their winning work showcased on the website of popular digital channel, propeller4film.
The graduates from the School of Computing, Informatics and Media, who submitted the work while still studying at the University, won prizes in the Factual, Entertainment and Animation categories.
Dr Ian Palmer, Dean of the School of Computing, Informatics and Media, said "These pieces show off the talents of our dedicated and committed students. We are incredibly proud of the professional work produced, which combines an outstanding level of technical ability and very good visual storytelling skills."

"Every time a driver applies the brakes, the kinetic energy of motion of the vehicle is converted to heat energy and dissipated to the environment," says Ford Professor of Quality Engineering, Andrew Day, who has been researching into brakes for over 30 years. "Almost since cars were invented, engineers and designers have been thinking of ways to try and save the braking energy somehow and re-use it, but cost, weight and complexity have meant that regenerative braking has remained almost unknown in road vehicles, and friction brakes reign supreme.
"It looks as if this might be changing as the need for significant reductions in emissions from road vehicles of 'greenhouse gas' carbon dioxide (CO²) is increasingly recognised.
"Professor Day and Professor Alastair Wood, the Dean, have supervised Philipp Meise, a PhD research student whose thesis, 'Energy flow in regenerative braking for road vehicles', has just been completed. Philipp has designed and built an experimental regenerative braking system which has been fitted to a car to validate some of the predictions of the possible benefits of regenerative braking."

In September 2011, the School of Health Studies will move to its new home on the main University campus from its current base in Trinity Road, where it has been based since joining the University in 1996.
This exciting new development will include purpose-built clinical skills and student areas. Look out for updates on our new build on the School website www.bradford.ac.uk/health where we hope to have a webcam to keep you up to date with the action.
A new Dean started at the School of Health Studies in October 2009. Shirley Congdon RGN DipN BSc(Hons) MA joins us from Liverpool John Moores University.
Shirley has worked within the field of higher education for 22 years during which time she has held a number of posts related to health and social care education, previously working in two large post-1992 Universities. Her professional and academic expertise lies within the area of service modernisation and cultural change, research methods and evidence-based practice. She also has significant experience of working with NHS Trusts and the Department of Health developing and delivering programmes associated with the modernisation process.
Shirley is passionate about the student experience and believes that by engaging students in positive learning experiences they will in turn engage in a caring and positive way with the public, patients and carers. She comments, "by putting patients and carers at the centre of the focus for learning and teaching, the School of Health Studies will continue to impact positively on the service people receive in the NHS and independent and third sectors."
Shirley believes that the programme portfolio needs to further reflect the needs of the NHS, the social care sector and voluntary sector. "During this next year we will be working in a planned process of stakeholder engagement in order that we ensure our programmes are fully aligned to the needs of the communities we serve."
Do you know about the wide range of CPD opportunities available for healthcare professionals at the School of Health Studies?
Or that you can access many of them free of charge if you work for the NHS in Yorkshire and the Humber?

Alumni, staff and current students in Archaeological, Geographical and Environmental Sciences have been involved in a fascinating variety of recent activities across time, from the prehistoric to the present day and into the future; and across the globe, from Yorkshire to South Africa.
Dr Liz Sharp, Senior Lecturer in Geography and Environmental Science, has been part of a successful bid to the European Union called 'Prepared', to study how water utilities adapt to, and prepare for, climate change. Climate change will bring more extreme events such as flooding and droughts in the future, but responding to these threats in traditional ways, by building more reservoirs and bigger drainage pipes, will not only be disruptive and damage the environment, but will also be very expensive. This project works with water utilities to think about more innovative ways to prepare for climate change. Further details can be found at www.bradford.ac.uk/archenvi/news/Climate%20change.php
Think Business@Bradford, the University's business start-up support programme, runs an annual business competition encouraging students and graduates to enter a business idea. Students on the MSc Cancer Pharmacology course at the Institute of Cancer Therapeutics are finding success in winning places at the world-renowned University of Cambridge.
Qashif Ahmed, from Milton Keynes, graduated this week, after completing his MSc in Cancer Pharmacology at the internationally acclaimed ICT. He has now been offered a PhD position at the Babraham Institute at the University of Cambridge. He will be working on a project that involves understanding the mechanisms controlling a cellular process called autophagy.
Speaking about his success, Qashif said: "The MSc in Cancer Pharmacology opened my eyes to the role that research plays in terms of drug discovery. This inspired me to look for PhD positions in a cancer or cancer-related field."
"For me, this is an amazing opportunity as I had never dreamed of being a student at the University of Cambridge. The experience of this MSc course and the guidance offered by the staff was invaluable in securing the PhD position," he said.
Qashif will join the growing list of students to move onto acclaimed PhD positions. Last year, Patience Musiwaro also obtained a PhD position at Cambridge after graduating from the same course. Katerina Prokopiou, who also graduated in 2008, is now in a PhD position at Trinity College, Dublin.
Further information about the MSc in Cancer Pharmacology and other courses at the Institute of Cancer Therapeutics can be found at: www.cancer.brad.ac.uk/postgraduate-study/
October has brought the announcements of the 2009 FT rankings for our Master's programme, and also for the Executive MBA. We have been ranked 9th in the UK and number 50 in the world for our Master's in Management programme, and we have retained our position as No 1 in the North of England for our Executive MBA programme, also 9th in the UK. Thank you to all of you who have contributed to the data submission required to achieve these rankings. We rely on you to keep our programmes well positioned in the rankings.
This year we are aiming to achieve the AACSB (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) award, which would give us the coveted triple accreditation of AMBA, Equis and AACSB which few Schools have succeeded in gaining. AACSB International is an association of educational institutions, businesses, and other organisations devoted to the advancement of higher education in management education.
Our mentor for this process, Professor Gary Giamartino, who is Dean of School of Business at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, visited the School last month to help advise on our accreditation.
We are also being reviewed by AMBA in 2009, so we will be working hard to ensure that we retain this quality mark.
This year we will be having a January intake of the full-time MBA, which will be an accelerated MBA programme over 10 months rather than 12. Two new undergraduate degrees - BSc Integrated Management Practice and BSc Financial Planning - are on schedule for introduction in September 2010.
In addition, plans for a collaborative arrangement with MDIS in Tashkent to deliver BSc degrees in Business and Management Studies; Accounting and Finance; Marketing; and International Business & Management are progressing through the approval processes, with a view to these being available in September 2010.
The School has made provision for University of Bradford alumni to receive discounts off the cost of postgraduate study - 20% for those graduating with a first-class degree and 10% for those achieving an upper second- class degree from the University. In addition, scholarships of up to £2,000 are available for UK/EU MSc students.
