Congratulations to Brian Harte (Electronic Imaging and Media Communications - 2002)

Graduate Brian Harte, who recently won two accolades at the British Professional Photography Awards 2007 held in Newcastle in November has now made it a hat trick!

Brian, who received support setting up his own photography business from Think Business@Bradford, won a trip to the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International Competition in Las Vegas as his prize in Newcastle, and has just heard that he has also been awarded an Accolade of Excellence.

Brian said: "I couldn’t stay for the awards ceremony as I had to be back in Yorkshire to shoot a snowy wedding so I'll have to wait for my Certificate to arrive. It won't be quite the same receiving it in the post but I'll be marking the occasion with a party for friends and family".

I am sure you will join with us in congratulating Brian, now an International Award-Winning Wedding Photographer.

For more information about Brian's photography business, visit http://www.brianharte.co.uk (external link)

Alumni Profiles

Isabelle Malouf (Pharmacy 1980) and Dimitri Araj (Civil & Structural Engineering 1981)

Isabelle met Dimitri on the 5 May 1977 at a meeting of the Association of Overseas Students which was chaired by Dimitri - he asked her out for a drink after the meeting and they have been together ever since.

"We have many good memories of our Bradford days. The best was when Bradford won University Challenge and both of us were in the audience. The saddest of our Bradford days was when Barbara Leach was murdered by the Yorkshire Ripper - she lived in Isabelle's Hall of Residence," recalled Dimitri.

After graduation Isabelle worked in community pharmacy while Dimitri worked for a consulting firm in Croydon. They were married in the Greek Orthodox Church in Crystal Palace in August 1982. In 1984 Dimitri got a job in Saudi Arabia where they lived for two years. In November 1986 they returned to England where Isabelle gave birth to Victoria and the whole family moved to live in Bethlehem, Palestine - Dimitri's home town.

In 1988 the Palestinian Intifada and the worsening situation under the Israeli Occupation eventually forced Dimitri and Isabelle to move back to England and they settled in Oxted, East Surrey. Dimitri worked for a firm of consultants in London and then for Bexley Council on major road projects. Isabelle had their second daughter Serena in 1989 and started working part-time in local pharmacies.

Ten years later in 1998 there were calls from Palestine from Dimitri's family to go back to contribute to Bethlehem 2000 projects. They rented out the house in Oxted and went back to Palestine with the two girls who were 11 and 8. They built a family home in Bethlehem. The second Intifada started in September 2000. They waited and hoped things would settle down but the situation worsened. After a lot of deliberating they decided to return to England at the beginning of 2001. Dimitri got his old job back and Isabelle continued doing locum work as a pharmacist. Their daughters went back to the local schools in Oxted. Victoria is now 21 and at Manchester University studying Economics and Development Studies. Serena is in her final year of school and will go to University to study Mathematics.

"Victoria looked at Bradford when choosing a university and we were pleased to see the Pharmacy School is still going from strength to strength but Dimitri was sad to see the closure of the Civil Engineering Department.

"We celebrated 25 years of marriage in 2007 and Bradford will always have a place in our hearts - after all it gave us each other!!"

In Memoriam

Malcolm Roy Arnold (Archaeological Sciences)

21st February 1962 - 5th February 2008

Malcolm was born on 21st Feb 1962 and laid to rest on the same date 46 years later in Norwich, not far from his home in Cromer.

Malcolm arrived in Bradford in 1985 to commence what is probably best described as "a brief academic career" in the School of Archaeology. However he is probably better remembered, initially, for his Students' Union career. Sporting a moustache and pony tail that was the envy of all, he was elected to the sabbatical post of Treasurer between 1986-1987. He served the Students' Union with the then President, Dave Ramseyer. Dave was famed for the alleged smashing of the large windows adjacent to the Great Hall on D Floor of the Richmond Building. As became his habit over the years Malcolm was there to console Dave but never to judge. Dave Ramseyer was among a number of ex-Students' Union officers who attended the funeral. Jon "Suggs" Motler served as Deputy President '88-'89, Ziggy Heron was Ents Officer '90-'91 and Andy Clegg was an Exec Member '87-'88.

After his sabbatical year ended Malcolm became an employee of the Union, working behind the bars, eventually becoming Bars Manager. It was his bar career that most people will remember Malcolm for, whether you were one of the many that worked bars or you were looking for refreshment for your club/society event. Malcolm, or just simply "Chief" as he was affectionately known, was always there with a smile and that friendly "go on, I dare you" roll of the eyes. He took FNDs to a whole new level and created that Friday binge-drinking phenomenon 15 years before it became such a national pastime. The creation of the 70s revival disco "M&M's" was another of Malcolm's inventions, along with Munsoor "Muns" Negyal, another Bradford Alumni, who attended the funeral. The attendance of Sarah Gibson, Nick Briggs, Carl Bower and Emma Harris, all great friends of Malc, all ex-bar staff, all ex-Bradford students tells the esteem that Malc was held in by those lucky enough to have known him.

1996-97 saw Malcolm develop a series of neurological problems that was eventually diagnosed as a tumour on the brain which was operated on in 1997. Unfortunately Malcolm's epilepsy worsened and he eventually returned home to the care of his family toward the end of 1997. Further tumours were diagnosed with the most recent being inoperable, causing Malc to spend the final months of his life needing constant nursing care. Even at his most vulnerable he still engendered an affection in people, as the attendance and fondness of his carers at the funeral is testament to. Apparently that trademark roll of the eyes was there right to the end. He will be very sadly missed.

The University has been chosen to be part of the UK's Media Academy Network - a national footprint of colleges and universities working with industry to develop a new wave of talent. The Media Academy Network was launched in December 2007 in London by Culture Minister James Purnell, Skills Minister David Lammy and a host of representatives from the media industry.

First graduates from the Law School

The first crop of LLB students will graduate from Bradford University Law School this summer. Bradford University Law School (BULS) is a part of the SoM and was founded in 2005, now taking in 100 LLB students each year and expanding its profile in 2008 also to teach the Graduate Diploma in Law (the 'conversion' course for graduates of other disciplines who wish to qualify in England and Wales as solicitors or barristers). Just over 50 students formed the first cohort in 2005 and as they walk over the stage to shake hands with the Chancellor in July, there will be special pride showing on the faces of the law staff who have seen their 'first born' grow and develop, along with the School, over three academic years.

The Graduate Diploma in Law

A qualification you must have if, as a non-law graduate, you wish to become a solicitor or barrister. You can take the course full-time over a year (September – June) or part-time, two evenings per week, over two years. Sacred Marks, Sacred Space

Friday 20 June – Friday 25 July 2008 & Saturday 28 June, 10am – 4pm

The tradition of calligraphy and of illuminated manuscript reached its heights in the Mughal Era. Calligraphy, being an art form with Islamic and Arabic roots, remained an accepted and developed art form and, since it was not in conflict with religion, it has never been short of patronage throughout Islamic history. Practised by some of the most outstanding masters, the art of calligraphy has established itself as a sublime art form in Islamic art.

This exhibition is a celebration of the best in calligraphy, miniature and illuminated manuscripts by artists practising today.

Theatre in the Mill

Thanks to a significant investment by the University, Theatre in the Mill is now able to embark on an upgrade of our facilities. Some of this work will be behind the scenes, some more obvious (air conditioning) and all of the work will be a direct benefit to you, our audience. We'll be closed while the work is undertaken but come September 2008 we'll be in party mood for the grand reopening. Until then we’ll be developing new shows with our resident and associate artists and we'll keep you updated with their progress and developments.

Something very exciting is happening at the Theatre in the Mill and we hope you can join us for the opening celebrations in September!

And finally . . .

Once again we hope you have enjoyed catching up on the latest news from the University of Bradford, and we would like to thank those of you who have taken the time to give us your views and comments on what you would like us to include. Email us at alumni@bradford.ac.uk.

Please contact us if you have any news that you would like to pass on through this newsletter, which is now circulated to over 7,000 graduates, from all faculties, all years, all countries and the list is growing with every edition!

We can help if you want to send a note to one or two fellow classmates. We operate strictly within the guidelines of the Data Protection Act and are not able to give out contact details for graduates of the University, but we are always happy to send on stamped letters for you. If you are not resident in the UK it may be easier for you to send a short email to the Alumni Office, who will print out your message and forward it on for you. Just let us know whom you are hoping to get in touch with and we will check for an up-to-date address. If you do not want anyone to get in touch with you in this manner, then please let the Alumni Office know so that we can make a note on your records that you do not wish to be contacted.

If you do not wish to receive this newsletter, or you receive it to more than one email address, please let us know and we will amend our records accordingly.
If you are in contact with other graduates of the University who did not receive The Braduate magazine posted out in 2007 and do not receive our e-newsletter, please forward this on to them, and ask them to update their details at http://www.bradford.ac.uk/alumni/form.php

Look out for your next e-newsletter in October 2008, and the 3rd edition of The Braduate magazine will be circulated in June 2008. If you would like to send us a profile to include in the e-newsletter or magazine please email us not more than 250 words and include a high-resolution photograph if possible to: alumni@bradford.ac.uk
