Funding Information for Taught Postgraduate Degrees

There are several opportunities for funding taught postgraduate degrees, both from within the university and from external funding sources. The options available will depend on the degree programme you wish to study, your nationality, your previous qualifications and various other factors. The following document is intended to give you some basic information on the main sources of funding available to study in the Division of Archaeological, Geographical and Environmental Sciences.

Scholarships for Archaeological Science courses (MSc Human Osteology/ Archaeological Prospection)

Fees only scholarships (Home/EEC only) are now available from the Division of AGES, funded by the School of Life Sciences. Bursaries are being offered for the MSc Human Osteology and Human Palaeopathology and MSc Archaeological Prospection courses.

Those wishing to be considered for the scholarships must complete the formal university application procedure and register an interest with the course manager, providing CV and references.

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)

The AHRC fund one-year Master's degrees both for research preparation (for students intending to proceed to doctoral research) and for professional preparation (for students  undertaking a Master's or Postgraduate Diploma course which will prepare them specifically for professional practice).

We are pleased to announce the award of two AHRC Studentships for Master's degrees as follows:

One Reseach Preparation Masters (RPM) award:

Research Preparation Master's awards provide funding for courses that focus on advanced study and research training explicitly intended to provide a foundation for further research at doctoral level.

One Professional Preparation Masters (PPM) award:

Professional Preparation Master's awards provide funding for Master's that focus on developing high level skills and competencies for professional practice in a field relevant to the content of the course.

The RPM and PPM awards can be used to fund a place on any of our Masters courses:

In order to be considered for nomination for one of the studentships, you must first satisfy the eligibility criteria, both academic and residential, which are set by the AHRC for all its postgraduate funding schemes. For information on these criteria, and on the nature and purposes of the studentships provided by the AHRC, please consult the following website: http://www.ahrc.ac.uk/FundingOpportunities/Documents/GuidetoStudentFunding.pdf.

Students wishing to apply for AHRC funding must be classed as either home or EU, have accepted a place on a Master's programme, and have completed the appropriate application form. All applications are reviewed within the University.

In the covering letter, please identify the programme of study and a case for support (max 500 words) for the award that you are applying for paying particular attention to how the award will help you realise your career goals.

A studentship will cover the cost of the fee and provide a maintenance award. The rates for the latter in 2010-2011 are £9,490 (Masters); we do not yet know what the rates will be for 2011-2012.

The deadline for applications is Friday 17th June at 5pm.

University Scholarship Scheme

The University is offering a series of scholarships for Academic Excellence, Countries in Crisis and Investing in Excellence and Community. Home, EU and International students may all be eligible to apply. Please click here for further details, or contact our Postgraduate Admissions Secretary.

University Bursaries for Home and EU Students

This year the University is offering discounts of £750 off tuition fees for all current University of Bradford final year home and EU students, as well as Bradford citizens currently in their final year at other Universities in the UK.

In addition, all home or EU students who meet the eligibility criteria will qualify for a further University Postgraduate bursary of £500.

Additional Sources of Funding

The following sources of funding may not fund all your fees and living expenses, but can be used to make a contribution towards the costs.

Career Development Loans

CDLs are deferred repayment loans to help pay for vocational education or training and are available through four major banks: Barclays, Clydesdale, The Co-operative and the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Hardship Funds

The University of Bradford has limited 'Hardship' funds to help students in financial need. These are typically awarded to home students who have already raised a substantial proportion of course fees by other means but need a little extra. Further details available from Student Information Services (01274 236500).

Part-time Study

Whilst part-time study may not be your first choice, it is worth serious consideration. It gives the opportunity to spread your course of study (and the fees) over a longer period of time, enabling you to work part-time at the same time. If you are considering this option, talk directly to the Division so that we can devise a programme which suits your needs.
