The herbaria are a collection of around 25,000 specimens of botanical material recognised as a regional and national resource (see Arnold-Forster, K. 1993. Held in Trust: Museums and Collections of Universities in Northern England. HMSO, London.). It covers:
The collections are supported by an extensive archive of manuscripts, reprints and correspondence, and a substantial database (including the national database of the British Lichen Society's mapping programme) and the British Bryological Society's Photo Archive.

Research visitors, by prior appointment are welcome to work on the herbaria which are housed in a dedicated room (together with bryophyte, fungal, algal, higher plant and seed collections) supported by microscopical, computing and library facilities (including the British Lichen Society's Mapping Scheme database and backup documentation and a library with a catalogued lichen reprint collection of more than 8000 items). Loan material is available to researchers from home and abroad.
