BriefingYou may have seen a report in the media about Vice-Chancellor Mark Cleary’s business expenses. This article was somewhat misleading. Below we explain what these costs actually comprise, and why they are essential to the successful running of the University.
Paul Jagger, Chair of University Council, explained:
“Over a two-year period University of Bradford Vice-Chancellor Mark Cleary incurred £20,361 in business expenses (which equates to approximately £10,000 per annum), primarily related to overseas business travel.
“This business travel is essential to the success of the University. We have one of the highest proportions of international students amongst all UK universities, which brings in around £24m each year to the University, through fees for international students studying in Bradford, and through collaborations with overseas institutions delivering University of Bradford degrees to over 6,000 students abroad. Overseas meetings and engagements by the Vice-Chancellor are vital to ensuring we can deliver this valuable income stream to the University.
“Over the two-year period 50% of these costs were spent on the Vice-Chancellor’s travel and overseas costs for business trips to India, Malaysia, Dubai, Pakistan and Singapore. These are locations where we have both partner institutions and where we successfully recruit large numbers of students into Bradford.
“A further £6,553 related to train travel (approximately £3,000 a year). This relates to business meetings , primarily in London, and is mostly refunded by the meeting holder (such as the Higher Education Funding Council for England). (As such it is possible that other universities did not include this in their Vice Chancellor’s expenses).
“We are confident that these business costs are vital to the successful running of the University of Bradford, and that the money spent provides a strong return on investment to the finances of the University.”
In line with other pre-92 institutions, trade union members at the University of Bradford are not participating in strike action this Thursday, 30 June. As such any employees wishing to support colleagues in other institutions, by visiting picket lines or regional rallies etc, must do so in their own time, for example by taking annual leave.
The University is offering a 2 Stage Practical Training Programme this summer:

The Bradford Schools Robot Challenge brings the concept of the BBC’s Robot Wars here at the Student Central Amp Bar. Whilst having the same high excitement and entertainment factor as the TV version and is totally free.
It’s the accumulation of around 30 student and staff volunteers who have been on long term placements from Feb over eight local secondary schools, as either technical assistance or mentors, to support teachers and students in meeting the challenge. Without them the contest just wouldn’t be possible.
This will be the third year that this challenge has run, and it represents a successful partnership led by UBU and Education Bradford, along with the School of Engineering Design and Technology, the School of Informatics Media ands Computing and the Estates Departments, eight local secondary schools (5 of which are University feeders), and our main sponsors, NG Bailey (International Engineering Company) who fund the schools kit and some volunteer expenses.

Born in Bradford is a study of 13,500 families with new babies in Bradford. As the babies in the study grow it will be possible to identify those things that help them stay healthy and those things that are challenges to good health. Knowing these things will help to improve health in the city.
With infant mortality (deaths in the first year of life) greatly higher in Bradford than the average for the country as a whole it is essential for our communities to understand why and use what we learn to help plan ways to improve health for people in Bradford and elsewhere.
