The Clearing Helpline: Thursday 18 August and Friday 19 August 2011.
A very rewarding opportunity exists for staff to help a large number of young, and not so young, people who have not yet gained a place at university and hence find themselves in Clearing. The University requires people with a sympathetic ear and a good telephone manner who can receive calls, log initial information, and forward these enquiries to colleagues in academic areas.
No previous experience is required and full training will be provided. It’s really important that we have as many staff as possible available to help us so that we can answer the calls effectively and deal with all the queries, so any help that you can give will be greatly appreciated. Please make sure your line manager is supportive of your intention to volunteer.
Training sessions for staff will be held on Wednesday 3 August and Wednesday 10 August. To book onto a session go to: http://www.brad.ac.uk/dev-prog/development/index.php?course=CLHT
If you would like to find out more or volunteer your services, please e-mail Irene O’Hara at i.ohara1@bradford.ac.uk or ring ext 6235.
Thank you for your support.
Staff are invited to attend a ceremony at which the University will be saying goodbye to Bahiya Gent (Muslim Advisor), Harjap Pooni (Sikh Advisor), Rod Anderson (Church of England Chaplain) and also licensing the new Church of England Chaplains, Sam Corley and Chris Howson, and we will be welcoming Khaled Almudallal (Muslim Advisor).
Date: 13 June 2011
Time: 5.30 pm
Venue: Small Hall, Richmond Building, University of Bradford
The Licensing of the Church of England Chaplains will be conducted by the new Bishop of Bradford, Nick Baines (a member of the University Alumni). Therefore, this enjoyable ceremony will involve both formal and informal aspects.
The ceremony overall should not take more than 45 minutes and afterwards there will be light refreshments available.
Please will you indicate your attendance to e.a.rhodes@bradford.ac.uk by Wednesday 8 June 2011 in order that we can make the appropriate arrangements for seating and catering.

Join us for our 10th anniversary showcase to:
Our keynote speaker is David Boud, Professor Adult Education in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Technology Sydney. David has written extensively on teaching, learning and assessment in higher and professional education. In the area of assessment he has been a pioneer in developing learning-centred approaches to assessment particularly in student self-assessment (Enhancing Learning through Self Assessment, Routledge 1995) and building assessment skills for long-term learning (Rethinking Assessment in Higher Education: Learning for the Longer Term, Routledge, 2007).
From the next academic year the University is moving student email (Webmail) to 'Outlook Live', which means more services will be available to students, including:
Staff will continue to have access to the current Webmail for accessing their email via the web and off-campus.
From the next academic year the operating system on the LSS-maintained student cluster PCs will be upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7, and Microsoft Office will be upgraded from version 2007 to version 2010. Some School clusters may differ.
Staff office PCs supported by LSS will begin moving to Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010 from January 2012 onwards. Staff in IT Services will work closely with departments to arrange for the upgrades to happen, and the IT Trainers will provide training to staff at the time they move across.
We are investing significantly in enhancing the virtual learning spaces to complement the new campus learning and social spaces such as Student Central and The Green.
From September 2011 we will have an enhanced virtual learning environment (Blackboard v9.1) and that will allow us to deliver the services and support that students have told us they want easily and more effectively and efficiently.
We will be posting regular updates through all the usual channels, as well as consulting and meeting with Schools and support services to discuss transition arrangements for resits and courses that run over the summer.
Please visit http://www.brad.ac.uk/lss/it-services/changes/index.php for the latest changes as they happen, as well as frequently asked questions and answers.
In order to gather views on the products and services provided by on campus catering, Sodexo have created a short online questionnaire. Staff are invited to complete the survey and share their views.

The University has an Experts Directory (endorsed by the Deans in 2010) available to the external world, in particular to media and businesses. It was launched last Autumn and academics are now being invited to join.
If you want to raise your profile by joining the directory, complete the on-line application form. Your Dean of School will be asked to confirm he/she is happy for you to join. You will then be asked to attend a two and a half hour media and customer service training session prior to being added to the directory.

The University of Bradford is taking part in a national campaign called Universities Week, which runs from 13-19 June, and aims to promote the value of universities to society and business.
A national poll has been created on ‘The most important research in the field of health research by academics in the UK’, to support the media activity around Universities Week.
The case studies will feature in a report to be published on some of the most important research taking place in UK universities now, which will change the way we live in the future. University academics are invited to take part in the survey, to find out your views on what, in your opinion, is going to have the most impact in the future in the field of health research.
Please consider taking part in the survey

10 June - 29 July. Exhibition Launch Thursday 9 June 5 - 7pm
Due to the overwhelming success of last year’s Feel Good Festival we are delighted to announce that we are planning a second, bigger and better event!
We have taken on board your comments and suggestions from last year’s event and this year we have changed the date of the event (so hopefully those people who couldn’t attend last year may be able to do so this year), we are aiming to have more stalls, more workshops and a greater selection of food. Again we are encouraging everyone (supported by their manager) to attend for at least a 2 hour slot throughout the course of the afternoon (and once again this time does not need to be made up at a later date).
So please put Friday 24 June 2011(from noon onwards) in your diary and keep your fingers crossed for sunshine. The event will take place on the amphitheatre on City Campus again and we will also have the ground floor of Student Central.

topWorkshop 29th June 2011 - 9.30 am – 3.30 pm, Room L 30, Richmond Building
This programme has been developed in collaboration with The Yorkshire and the Humber Opening Doors to Health Professional Education Network (YAHODHPEN), to build on the very successful workshop held at the University of Huddersfield in July 2010 by the MIPPS Team (Managing Impairments in Practice Placement - SHA funded project completed in September 2010).
It aims to share the final outcomes of that project and provide an overview of on-going work at the Universities of Huddersfield and Bradford and across the Region, in supporting disabled students in practice placements. We will be joined by James Hill, lecturer and practitioner in physiotherapy, who will tell us how he managed to overcome the educational and occupational barriers posed by his severe dyslexia.
For more information and to book a place, please contact Dr Christine Dearnley, School of Health Studies - c.a.dearnley@bradford.ac.uk or ext 6449.
The next Library talk on copyright and licensing is taking place on 14th June (Tuesday) in Room 1.7 at the J.B. Priestley Library. The session commences at 12 noon for an hour and a half.

Recruiters are you discriminating without realising it? Recent legislation, particularly the Equality Act 2010, is having a significant impact on the recruitment and selection of employees and over the last year there has been a significant increase in case law in this area. In order to refresh and update your knowledge, it is therefore a UoB requirement for all recruiters (trained prior to October 2010) to attend a Recruitment and Selection Refresher Briefing. Please see available briefing dates.
Please note that if you have not yet attended the University's training or if your training is more than 5 years old, you should attend the full 2-day Recruitment and Selection course.
