A briefing note designed to give an overview of the pilot scheme is at www.brad.ac.uk/briefing/hera.pdf (pdf file). For all part-time staff - an opportunity for part-time staff to request convenient days to run Staff Development unit events in 2002/3On 10th June 2002 the Staff Development Unit will be meeting to discuss the programme for September 2002 - July 2003. We are aware that some of you may have experienced disappointment when staff development courses are run on days that are not convenient with your hours of work. It would be helpful to us if you could let us know which courses you may like to attend during the 2002/3 period and on which days of the week you would like the events to take place. A list of course we ran this year is available in the Orange Core Programme booklet (which hopefully you all have a copy of) or from the web at: www.brad.ac.uk/admin/staffdev/programmes/core/listbydate.html There will be some changes to events next year, but nothing substantial. We cannot promise to deliver the right answer for all respondents, but will take them into account when we set the course dates at our meeting on 10th June. The programme will be published in July 2002. Please respond by Monday 27th May 2002 by either e-mailing staffdev@bradford.ac.uk, calling ext. 3096 or calling into K22, Richmond Building.

SAINT - University Wide Student Information SystemIt's time to get involved. You are no doubt aware, we are about to enter the 'next phase' of the SAINT project, leading up to the CAMS/SRS live running from September 2002. This means a busy schedule of training over the summer, which will be concentrating heavily on module selection and assessment (plus special training for UCAS clearing helpline staff). Full details available at: www.brad.ac.uk/admin/mis/saint-training/courses.htm We do however still receive occasional requests for training in those system components that are already 'live', namely:
If you or any of your colleagues still need training in any of these three areas, the SAINT Project Team would be grateful if you would let them know, so that they can assess the need for any further 'mop-up' courses during May - before the Summer training program begins. Contact Mike Mooney, SAINT Project Trainer on ext. 6036 or via email: M.J.Mooney@Bradford.ac.uk
SAINT Project - next presentationThe next presentation by the SAINT Project Team will be on 22nd and 23rd May in J19, Richmond Building. Please book a place for one of the sessions at either 9.30 - 12.00 or 2.00 - 4.30 (same times on both days). The presentation aims to give you a view of what SAINT is capable of in handling assessment marks and progression and award processes. It will be of interest to academic and support staff involved in all aspects of module assessment, as well as student progression and award processes. Booking is not essential, but to be sure of a place please contact Faye Smith in MIS; ext 3118, or email to: F.J.Smith1@bradford.ac.uk We will build on the April presentation and will not repeat material presented in that session. If you have not yet had any introduction to SAINT please see the SAINT website where you will find background information about SAINT, the overview document provided at the previous demonstration http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/SAINT/ssistagefour/latest_news.htm and the Project Training schedule http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/mis/saint-training/trainhome.htm We cannot give a detailed picture at this stage of exactly how we will use SAINT for assessment, progression and award because there is a great deal of diversity of practice across the University. Once you have seen what the system can do, we will discuss with you the best way to achieve a common approach for Bradford. As part of that process, we'll issue a questionnaire after the presentation, and follow it up with meetings in individual Schools. Outline programme: Part 1: Marks and Assessment Committees
Break Part 2: Boards of Examiners, re-assessment, progression and award
The Project Team
The Unit for Educational Research and Evaluation has movedFrom the 26th April, the Unit will be located in the Tumbling Hills Annexe, rooms PS01 to PS07. All telephone numbers will remain the same.
Christine Cartwright has taken retirementThe University's Voice Communications Manager for many years, Christine Cartwright, has taken retirement. I am sure she will be remembered as the mainstay of the University telephony service. Most of you will have been in touch with her over the years and I suspect it was often in panic mode when things went awry. Just under two years ago, Christine fell ill. Nevertheless, she kept in touch throughout her absence. Indeed, her advice was a great help recently, when the switchboard and telephony service had to relocate to the J B Priestley Building. It was a complicated process, in spite of being largely unnoticed by users of the service. Sadly, Christine has not yet made a full recovery and has decided to take retirement. She will be sorely missed. I am sure I speak for all who knew Christine when I convey to her our thanks for her invaluable support and our good wishes for a more rapid recovery and a long and happy retirement. A central account is available for those who wish to contribute to a leaving gift (Account code: 78055/8300/0017) and a retirement card is available in the Voice Communications Office, JB Priestley Building (room 01.10). Stan Houghton, Learning Support For further details you can contact Dr Stan Houghton on ext: 3303 or Roger Goodair on ext: 5332, Learning Support Services.
