New. Staff Development Events

Introduction to Management
Thursday 9 and Friday 10 September 2004

Ideally for staff who are new to management, or who have been a manager for between 0 and 2 years. A significant part of these two days will be spent building on participants' own experience to identify the skills needed to become (even) more effective. There will be input on good practice and University procedures plus some problem-solving case studies and a comprehensive guide to support services for managers.

Understanding (the) Chinese
Monday 13 September 2004

This workshop has been jointly organised by the Language Unit and the Staff Development Unit and will be based on four themes 1.Cultural Expectations - what do Chinese people typically expect of an English University and the British education system - what meets expectations and what comes as a bit of a surprise. 2.Communication skills for native speakers of English when listening to or explaining things to International Students. 3.An understanding of what native speakers of Chinese find difficult about English, and what errors in pronunciation and grammar Chinese learners typically make. 4.Some simple Chinese phrases and greetings - an introduction to Chinese.

New. ResNet and RoamNet news from Learning Support Services

As mentioned in previous Briefings, ResNet, the broadband-speed network in University-owned halls (apart from Shearbridge Green) is planned to be available for free (to University students only) in all rooms by 19th September 2004.

At the time of writing installation is on-going but there is nothing to indicate that this will not be completed in time.

The only place for up to date and accurate information is the ResNet web site http://www.resnet.brad.ac.uk/

This site includes a comprehensive FAQ. RoamNet has been expanding over the summer and the current status of that service, along with an FAQ, can be seen at http://www.brad.ac.uk/lss/it-services/support/roamnet.php

New wirelessly covered areas include F floor Richmond Refectory and the main Students' Union bars.

If you are told, or read, information which contradicts anything on these pages please take what is on these pages as correct. A number of web pages have old information copied from LSS documents some years ago and are quite incorrect. Students and staff should be referred to the above ResNet and RoamNet pages only.

Any questions which are not covered in the FAQs above please contact ictservicedesk@bradford.ac.uk

New. Join the Stars: Work with The Bradford Robotic Telescope Group

The telescope is in Tenerife on the Izania Caldera and the Group are looking for people to help accelerate the Telescope’s acceptance as the preferred method for delivering the space and astronomy components of the National Curriculum for all UK school children and for the education of school students in the rest of Europe starting with Spain.

A whole raft of skills are required.

There are lots of opportunities for further research across the whole spectrum of human and machine interaction including people who can exploit the facility to raise the profile of the University of Bradford through TV, radio, web and the written media.

Even if you are not interested look at the site with the Tenerife weather and pictures of a far flung Bradford outpost.

More details can be found in a briefing document accessible from www.telescope.org/~john

If you are interested ring John Baruch on 4024 or e-mail him at john@telescope.org.

International students who need to extend their Visas Reminder.

Many of our international students need to extend their visas during their course of study.

Are you unsure what documentary evidence of attendance and progression on their course you can provide if asked?

An Information Session will be held on Wednesday 8th September, 12.30pm to 1.30pm, Meeting Room 3 in the Communal Building, to explain the various ways in which you can do this.

All staff are welcome to attend the Session which will be run by Shirley Moorhouse, Student Adviser (who specialises in Immigration Advice and Visa Extensions), Students' Union Advice Centre.

Please send an email to s.m.baker@bradford.ac.uk if you would like to come and please bring with you a copy of the FLR(S) Visa Extension Application form which can be downloaded or printed (pdf file) from: http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/ind/en/home/applying/application_form.Maincontent.0010.file.tmp/compressedFLR(S)Aug03.pdf (external link to the Home Office, which will open in a new browser window).
