New. Threepenny Opera

8, 9 and 10 June, 7.30pm at Theatre in the Mill

Theatre in the Mill and Tasmin Little Music Centre present a joint production of The Threepenny Opera (1928) by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht.

Tickets £4.50, concessions £3.00 and £1 for Music Society Members

Fusing jazz with classical elements, the Weill/Brecht combination captures the satirical reference to 1920's German life, evoking the atmosphere of that period by its jazzy and brilliant scoring. The Threepenny Opera contains the 'hit' number Mack the Knife, recently re-vamped by Robbie Williams.

New. Scheduled computer and telephony downtime
Saturday 26th June

Essential Electrical work is to be carried out in the computer room at the University on Saturday 26th June 04, between 08:00 hours and 18:00 hours.

A dedicated power supply will be installed for the new equipment which is required to provide a faster connection to JANET and the internet, via the Yorkshire and Humber Metropolitan Academic Network (YHMAN).

The work means that there will NO computer access from anywhere on campus to the internet, email, Blackboard, SAINT, user files on G and H drives, student cluster PCs, dial-in service, Library or UNIX systems. Individual staff PCs will work if started up in 'workstation' mode but you must ensure that any files you need are stored on your C drive before the closedown.

Central services will start to be closed down from 17.00 on Friday 25th June and will not be restarted until Sunday morning. Telephone renewals of Library materials will not be available until Monday morning. Essential maintenance to the telephone system has also been scheduled for Saturday 26th June. This means that there will be no phone system operational from 08.00 until mid afternoon on that day.

We apologise for any inconvenience these essential upgrades may cause.

Staff IT Training Needs

Would you like us to take into account your individual IT training needs when putting together our training programme for the next academic year?

If so, this helps us get a more complete picture in addition to the Departmental training needs we get via the Staff Development Sub-Committee.

To get a printed copy of the survey, contact us by e-mailing training@braford.ac.uk or by telephoning extension 5356

Alternatively you can complete the form on the web at: http://www.brad.ac.uk/lss/training/tests/trainingneeds.tp3

This survey will take about 3 minutes to complete, and we would like returns by Friday 11 June.

Staff Development Unit Training Programme 2004/5

In late-June the Staff Development Unit will be deciding what goes into their training programme for September 2004 - July 2005.

We have been in touch with School Staff Development Coordinators to find out what Schools/Planning Units would like us to do during 2004/5, but we'd also be interested in the following from individuals:

  • further individual requests for new or existing events
  • requests for events to be run on certain days/times of the week (particularly for part-time staff)
  • requests for events to run at particular times of the year

We cannot guarantee that we will meet every request for an event or be able to arrange the dates to everyone's satisfaction, but we can assure you we will take all suggestions into consideration and do our best to meet people's needs. The final programme will be published in late August to all staff.

Please let us have any comments by Friday 18 June 2004 by either e-mailing staffdev@bradford.ac.uk, calling us on ext. 3096 or sending us a note in the internal mail.

Down a Rainbow

Jeremy Nicholls & Theatre in the Mill present

Down a Rainbow
17 and 18 June at 9pm

Atrium, JB Priestley Library
Tickets £6.50, concessions £4.00

The second of Theatre in the Mill's special commissions, this time in partnership with the J.B. Priestley Library, Dr. Christine Finn and film-maker Jeremy Nicholls.

In 1954 Priestley and his wife Jacquetta Hawkes visited the American South West with a set purpose, to explore man as a social animal. Whilst Priestley explored the male dominated, stainless steel-clad Texas of the oil-boom, Hawkes reflected upon the arts, crafts and immemorial rites of the Pueblo and Navaho Indians. From this journey emerged a remarkable book 'Journey Down a Rainbow'.

Fellow in Theatre, Iain Bloomfield, Dr Christine Finn and film-maker Jeremy Nicholls (Frantic Assembly, Oily Cart) create a piece for film and actors that reflects upon this magnificent book and aims to contribute to the reassessment of the work of Jacquetta Hawkes, prior to the publication of her biography by Christine Finn.

Gallery II - Sense of Space Reminder.

EIMC Degree Show

1 - 11 June, open 11am - 3pm weekdays

This exhibition marks the culmination of work by University of Bradford students on the Final Year module Imaging Innovations. Twenty students and two tutors in the Department of Electronic Imaging and Media Communications have all participated in a year long programme of activities. This is very much a group show. As such it reflects the overall philosophy of the course and has students working in close partnership with tutors and each other to produce work specifically intended for public exhibition. The work is personally challenging and is the ultimate expression of students' (as well as tutors') creative thinking.

Much of the work stems from the detailed consideration of real urban and public spaces. It is also an investigation into the material and social nature of creativity and innovation in visual communication and design.

This exhibition is being run in conjunction with the EIMC Final Year Show taking place at the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television.
