New. Royal Institute of Philosophy Lecture

Wednesday 9 November, 4pm, in Richmond N7 (please note room change).

This week's Royal Institute of Philosophy Lecture is given by Simon James, formerly of Bradford University, now at Durham University. The title of his talk is 'Virtue Ethics, Human Well-being and the Natural Environment.' Here is a synopsis of his talk: In recent years, there has been a great deal of interest in virtue ethics, the ethical approach originally articulated and defended by such thinkers as Plato and Aristotle. But can such an approach provide the basis for a satisfactory account of our moral relations with the natural world? One argument that it cannot runs as follows. According to virtue ethics, the virtuous agent must be motivated by a desire to better herself, which is to say that virtue ethics incorporate a 'self-centred' conception of moral motivation. Since the 'self' in question is as a matter of fact a human self, they are also inherently 'human-centred' and hence ill suited to treating environmental matters.

In this talk I set out to prove (1) that this objection does not, in fact, hold water, and (2) that an 'environmental virtue ethic', far from being a contradiction in terms, would have several advantages over other approaches to environmental ethics.
