New. A New Voice for Disabled Staff

The Disability Office would like to support interested staff in setting up a forum where disabled staff can meet or get in touch with each other, share their views, ideas and concerns in an environment that is developed and controlled by disabled staff.

The forum would also provide a consultative group that could give feedback and input to evolving University policies that affect disabled staff. This is particularly important in view of recent legislation.

We would like to invite all disabled staff to join this group. You do not need to have a visible impairment and you not need to have disclosed that you are disabled to join us.

The forum will provide an opportunity for disabled staff to meet, or discuss via an email forum, issues affecting them. The group will choose its own focus and terms of reference in an initial meeting, and individual experiences will only be discussed if you choose to share.

This will be an opportunity for disabled staff to have a collective voice on issues affecting them. Please contact Helen Murdoch in the Equality Unit on h.murdoch@bradford.ac.uk in the first instance to express your interest. A date, time and venue of an initial meeting will be sent to staff interested in participating.

If you have any concerns about joining or any general queries or concerns, please contact Gill Simpson in the Disability Office on g.simpson1@bradford.ac.uk or extension 5156.

We look forward to hearing from you.

New. Calling all Users / ex users of Speech Recognition Software

We are looking for anyone who has ever used Speech Recognition Software at all, in whatever shape, form or version eg: IBM Via Voice, Dragon, Microsoft, etc.

As users of Speech Recognition (SR) software (sometimes referred to as Voice Recognition Software / Technology) we have begun to debate its advantages and disadvantages. We have not yet found any systematic long-term studies of how people use the software and how it may affect writing styles and pproaches to writing tasks.

We are using an online questionnaire as a pilot study and hope you can become involved.

If you are interested and are willing to spend 10 -15 minutes of your time, our questionnaire can be found at:

http://www.bradford.ac.uk/srquestionnaire

Please be assured that we value all contributions to our study. All information will be treated in strict confidence.

If you have any questions pertaining to this research please email: speechrec@bradford.ac.uk

Many thanks for your time.

New. Hazardous Waste

The following types of waste are now classed as hazardous waste under the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005:

  • PC's and IT equipment
  • fluorescent tubes
  • anything containing batteries
  • Cytotoxic waste
  • gasses and pressure containers
  • oils
  • fridges
  • asbestos
  • mercury

The above list is not exhaustive (see http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/subjects/waste/1032477/800036/?version=1&lang=_e external site will open in a new window)

If you are disposing of any hazardous waste you must do so in accordance with regulations, most importantly this means not sending it to landfill with your general waste. If you are arranging collection for disposal (most frequent instances of this are clinical waste of a hazardous nature such as cytotoxic, and disposal of PC's) you will be asked by the company disposing of it for a registration number for the location. This identifies the premises within the University which have now been registered with the Environment Agency. #

The codes as follows:

  • Cancer Research Facility (All Saints Road): ABP270
  • Nursery and Health Centre (Laistridge Lane): ADE935
  • City Campus: ADF070
  • School of Health: ADF143

I am still waiting for the code for the School of Management (there is no regular collection of hazardous waste as in the other locations so this one is taking slightly longer - for the time being use temporary code EXEXXX which the Environment Agency have given us).

Please note, waste disposal points such as skips and wheelie bins are for the disposal of University waste. They are not for public use or for staff to put their own private waste and anyone bringing waste from outside the University (whether staff or not) is effectively fly-tipping and could incur a range of penalties. We are getting CCTV at some point in the future and I would not want staff to find themselves in hot water with the University or the Environment Agency for lack of knowledge about what they are doing.

Exhibition at Gallery II

Chinese Art: Traditions and Innovations
Friday 16 September - Friday 14 October 2005

Weekdays 11am - 5pm (Thursdays until 6pm) | Free

Chinese art goes back to the first millennium before Christ and was the source of inspiration for Japanese art before the eighteenth century. After recovering from the Cultural Revolution, Chinese art is prospering again.

This exhibition of contemporary Chinese art includes paintings strictly following the Chinese classical artistic tradition, and paintings which bring innovation to the tradition as well as works seeking inspiration from the very early stages of Chinese art, folklore art, religious art, and a few works which reflect the international art movements of the late 20th century.

This exhibition is presented by Dr. Rebekah Xiao Zhao, who moved from China to the UK with her family after gaining her PhD in Chinese History in 1994. She currently teaches Chinese in Ampleforth College, Leeds University and Bradford University (School of Management).
