New. Microsoft Office 2007 - what's all the fuss about?

Microsoft Office 2007 is here, and it looks very different! Students are arriving with Office 2007 installed on their computers, or sending Office
2007 attachments by e-mail.

At the University of Bradford, the Student Public Cluster computers will be upgraded over the summer and will have Office 2007 installed by the start of the academic year. A roll-out and training programme is already in progress for some pilot groups of staff, and it is expected that the main move will take place after Christmas. If your department is supported by the IT Services (Computer Centre), your Computer Officer will be in touch later in the year to discuss plans. If you are not supported your department's Computer Officer will be responsible for the roll-out. For more details, read the Learner Support Services bulletin at: http://www.brad.ac.uk/lss/news/bulletin/2007-05/office2007.php

However, there is no need to panic! Office 2007 files can be opened with earlier versions of Office. A brief overview of the new look, and issues to consider, is given in a guide 'Moving to Microsoft Office 2007 - a Guide for Staff' which can be found at:
http://www.bradford.ac.uk/lss/documentation/index.php#Wordprocessing

Staff who tried out Office 2007 at the recent Learning Teaching and Assessment Conference responded very positively. A typical comment was "Looks impressive and quite intuitive to use!"

A series of presentations are taking place over the summer, and further dates will be organised in the Autumn term. These will give you a chance to see the new features of Office 2007, and to ask any questions. Dates are:

  • Thursday 14 June, 1 - 2pm, Room C7, Richmond Building
  • Wednesday 20 June, 9.30 - 10.30am, Interactive Learning Centre, School of Health Studies
  • Wednesday 11 July, 1 - 2pm, Room C7, Richmond Building
  • Monday 16 July, 1 - 2pm, Old Lecture Theatre, School of Health Studies.

The latest details of training and support will be posted on the IT Staff Training News page at :
http://www.brad.ac.uk/lss/training/news-staff.php

In the meantime if you have any questions or concerns please direct them by e-mail to ictservicedesk@bradford.ac.uk

New. 2007-08 Handbook for New Staff - your assistance required

People Development are starting work on the 2007 - 08 Handbook for New Staff. The current version may be downloaded in Word format from: http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/staffdev/hbk/about.php

If colleagues notice any inaccuracies, could they please copy the relevant section(s) into a separate Word document, make any required changes, and send the edited document(s) to: staffdev@bradford.ac.uk, (Please quote “Updates for Staff Handbook 2007-08” in the subject line).

However:

to avoid potential duplications or contradictions - please work collaboratively with colleagues and, where necessary, let the relevant head of department check that the updated info is OK; and only send one updated section (or sections) from each department or School

try to keep the information as brief as possible, and remember that it is aimed at new staff;

try to ensure that the text and any images submitted are DDA-compliant, if possible (but we will also be checking this anyway);

all updates to be submitted by the end of June, if possible.

Thanks for your help!

Training and Development Opportunities for Staff

New. Clearing Training Days 2007

Training Sessions have been scheduled for Tuesday 3 July (9.30am and 1.30pm sessions) and Thursday 12 July (9.30am and 1.30pm sessions). These will take place in the JB Priestley Library, in rooms 01.4 and 01.53.

Attendance at one 3 hour session (morning or afternoon) on either day is considered sufficient to provide all staff working on the Helpline the necessary experience (revision) in dealing with callers and working with relevant SAINT screens. This session may also assist departmental staff by providing a framework for base room activity.

A drop-in session has been arranged for Tuesday 14th August (11am - 2pm) in room 01.53 as a refresher session for any staff volunteers who want to practice any aspect of the Clearing Helpline.

Even if you are already familiar with the above SAINT-based facilities, it is essential that all those intending to support confirmation and clearing activities, either on the Helpline, or at departmental level attend a training session.

To reserve a place at one of the July training sessions, please complete a booking form at the following web page:
http://www.brad.ac.uk/dev-prog/development/index.php?course=CLHT

Confirmation of your place and any final details will be sent to you during the week prior to the training.
