New. Planning the 2004 Staff Satisfaction Survey - Thanks and a Reminder

Many thanks to all of those staff who took the time to participate in meetings of Focus Groups and who responded to telephone focussing. Your valued responses have helped us to plan and design the 'Priorities for the Future' section of the 2004 Staff Satisfaction Survey.

The two sections of the Survey (questionnaire and 'Priorities for the Future' comparisons) are now at a final drafting stage and should be ready for an on-line trial soon after the Easter weekend break.

We are on target, and if all goes well with the trial then the 2004 Staff Satisfaction Survey will go 'live' for on-line completion by all staff from Monday April 19 until May 7.

Hard copies will also be available during the first week for staff who normally receive staff briefing on paper rather than by email.

Remind your colleagues about the Survey and help us to get an even better completion rate in 2004 than we did in 2002.

New. Are you having a spring-clean?

Have you thought about what waste you are going to generate? At this time of year, there are a lot of clear-outs: students are away, office moves start taking place, staff change jobs etc. As a consequence, the portering staff are having to deal with a lot of rubbish which is ending up on corridors when departments have a clear out. This causes a number of hazards, not least a fire hazard as the material is usually combustible and obstructs fire exits. It also ends up sitting in public areas either inside or outside the buildings which does not give a very good impression of the University to any visitors or prospective students.

If you are having a clear out, please speak to Ancillary Services (call 4852 or email portering@bradford.ac.uk) first in order that we can make arrangements for disposing of the waste that is likely to be generated. A phonecall to tell us that you have put it on the corridor is not good enough. There may be skips to be arranged, staff to be made available, transport needed or even special waste disposal to be requested (if the waste is not the usual office waste or recycling).

In the case of furniture, some prior notice can enable us to find someone to take the furniture and re-use it rather than having to put it in a skip (as a guide, the cost of disposing of a desk this way is probably around £20, re-using the desk probably saves someone else in the University around £150 to £200 as they won't have to buy a new one).

The corridors, landings, entrances, carparks and lifts are not waste storage areas and should not be treated as such even if we do try and clear them to avoid a hazard. The correct way of dealing with waste is to get it straight from the room it is in, out to the skip or van and away from site all in one go.

New. Staff Development Events

Counselling Skills Level 2 - a 1-day course for staff who have already attended the Basic Counselling Skills course to further develop counselling skills. This course is particularly appropriate to personal tutors. Wednesday 21 April 2004, 09.00 - 16.00.

Overview of the Leglislation - a 1-day course for managers to raise awareness of the implications of employment legislation on the manager's role. Eversheds (the Unversity's law firm) will be providing an overview of Employment Law, Equality & Diversity and Data Protection through a combination of presentations and interactive sessions. Monday 10 May 2004, 09.15 - 16.30.

Creative Writing - 2 x 45 minute sessions (staff are encouraged to attend both sessions) for any staff for releasing “writer“s magic“ in you and freeing up your creative, imaginative potential to improve the fluency and impact of your writing; and help to overcome blocking, writing apprehension and other writing process problems. Friday 14 and 28 May 2004, 13.05 - 13.50.

New. Peer Assisted Learning (PAL)

Peer Assisted Learning (PAL)Schemes involve final year undergraduates supporting first (and often second level) students. PAL facilitators do not 'teach' but act as facilitators in discussion groups to help other students from their own Schools become more effective learners. They focus group discussion, for example, on assignments, difficult topics or effective learning techniques. The emphasis is on student informally helping student, and PAL Schemes are complementary to current personal tutoring arrangements in Schools. There is increasing evidence at PAL Schemes help improve student retention and results and can be particularly effective in supporting new students, particularly international students, through their first semester. PAL facilitators gain from the experience in terms of reinforcing their own learning, development of key skills(e.g. group work; negotiation)and in enhancing their CVs.

A PAL Scheme was launched last year at the School of Management and this will be continued in the next academic year. However, the introduction of PAL Schemes may be of interest to other Schools too, so a meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 20th April, 1.00pm, in room D51, Richmond Building, to organise a centralised training programme for PAL student facilitators. It is hoped to launch this centralised programme in late May.

The meeting on 20th April will discuss the aim, outcomes, content of training, plus seek to coordinate the delivery of components of training between staff from all Schools interested in developing PAL Schemes. Colleagues from the UCAN Project will advise on certification opportunities for student facilitators.

The meeting is likely to last up to two hours; tea/coffee will be provided.

New. Be Vigilant - recent burglaries

There have been a recent spate of burglaries around the University which staff should be aware of. Burglaries have taken place as follows:

  • C, and E floors in the Richmond building plus Pemberton building
  • Items stolen include 2 desk top computers, 1 laptop computer and a 2 brief cases

Additionally, there have been attempted break-ins at Chesham and Ashfield buildings and D floor Richmond.

Please could all staff be extra vigilant and report anything suspicious to security.

New. European Computer Driving Licence

Applications to join the programme next year

The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is an internationally recognised IT qualification demonstrating basic computer literacy over a wide range of common applications. Staff Development is able to fund a number of places under the Post-Entry Training scheme.

If you are interested in applying for one of these places for next year, you will first need to attend one of the lunchtime ECDL Information sessions held from 1pm - 2pm in room 2.7 J B Priestley Library on: Monday 26 April 2004, or Thursday 13 May 2004.

Closing date for applications is Friday 18 June 2004.

In view of the number of enquiries we have received and the difficulties due to holiday arrangements of staff, we are extending the deadline for submission of the academic related cases to 10am on Monday, 26 April.

This is an absolute deadline and cases received in the Personnel Office after this time will not be considered as part of this year's exercise.
