New. Community Associates

The University has appointed six “Community Associates” who started work last week.

The new recruits will be based in the various academic Schools at the University and will be helping to support community projects and build closer links with voluntary and community organisations in Bradford and beyond.

The Associates are part of the University’s new initiative on community engagement - to be a University at ‘the heart of its communities’.

The new Centre for Community Engagement, which has also now been established as part of this, is headed up by Steve Skinner, formerly of Bradford Council's Department of Community Development and Lifelong Learning.

The Associates aim to help the University contribute further to the regeneration of the district, building on the good work that is already going on.

The six new Community Associates are:

  • Rukhsana Khan, who’s theme will be ‘Health’ and who will be based in the Schools of Health Studies and Life Sciences.
  • Katherine Wyatt, who will be based in the School of Management, working on the theme of ‘Ethnic Enterprise’.
  • Freda Shafi, who will be based in the School of Informatics, working on the theme of ‘Creative Industries’.
  • Lisa Cumming, who already works in the School of Social and International Studies, will lead on the theme of ‘Cohesion’.
  • Pat Fuller, who will be based in the School of Lifelong Education and Development working on the theme of ‘Capacity Building’.
  • Nafees Nazir, who will be based in the Schools of Archaeology, Geography & Environmental Science, and Engineering, Design and Technology working on the theme of ‘Environment and Heritage’.

To find out more about the Centre for Community Engagement, to get hold of the first Action Report entitled ‘Research on community engagement at the University of Bradford' or to lend any ideas to this new project, visit www.bradford.ac.uk/cce

Appraisee Training - Thursday 15 September 2005, 09.15 - 16.45

Aims to inform participants about the University's approach to appraisal, prepare participants to undertake appraisal, and to become familiar with the associated paperwork.
http://www.brad.ac.uk/dev-prog/development/index.php?course=APEE

Eating Disorders - Food for Thought - Friday 23 September 2005, 13.30 - 16.30
Target Audience: Lecturers, personal tutors, those who work closely with students, and pastoral staff.
Eating disorders are increasing in the general population and are one of the main life-threatening mental illness conditions in young people. In education we are likely to come across many students who have significant difficulty in their relationship with food, which can adversely affect their ability to achieve their potential in academic work. This may also have implications on the University's standards of student achievement and retention.
