BriefingBritish Science Festival – updates on the blog
The British Science Festival has well and truly started and a weekend of family fun, informative talks, interactive sessions and much more took place across the University and city on Saturday and Sunday.
There are four more days of events to follow and you can keep up to date and see photos and videos of the events at the University’s BSF blog. http://blogs.brad.ac.uk/bsf/
Enrolment for all new students will start on Wednesday 14 September through to noon Friday 23 September in the Great and Small Halls.
Enrolment will then continue in the Great Hall from Monday 26 September until 10 October. During the period 14 September to 23 September staff in Student Administration and Support will be very busy and may not be able to respond to queries in a timely manner. Please therefore only contact them between those dates if your query is urgent and enrolment-related.
New from the library: an interactive Blackboard course to teach your students about plagiarism and how to avoid it. The materials were created following the Senate and Learning and Teaching Committee recommendation (LTC 114/10-11, 25 May 2011) that a course be created which is compulsory for all new students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The course is designed to improve students’ awareness of plagiarism and test their knowledge and support school-based teaching.
Citation and referencing are mentioned only briefly in the course. As many different styles are in use across the university this is more appropriately dealt with in school and department-based teaching.
Students who fail the course will be referred to their personal tutors for further advice and guidance. If you have personal tutor responsibilities and you would like to have access to the new course, please contact your subject librarian who will make it available to you via Blackboard.
Well done to everyone who's been reducing, reusing and recycling! With the recycling, composting and furniture schemes we're continuing to see some very positive results.
This year (10/11) saw a rise in recycling rates to 69% (well above target) and a fall in the amount sent to landfill by a massive 32% to 156 Tonnes.
Improvements to the waste systems have seen a 22% increase in recycling since the first year of the full recycling system (07/08) and a 48% reduction in the amount of waste sent to landfill from 298 Tonnes to 156 Tonnes.

Student Activities in UBU have a series of Scrap Art activities going on until December this year and are in need of clean domestic waste. The project is about working with students, a local artist and primary school kids to turn waste materials into works of art that will help promote part of the Universities Recycling Strategy.
Example waste could include - Cans, milk cartons, cereal boxes, egg boxes, tetra pack cartons, other tough plastic packaging etc.
The art will be designed to last, so any materials that are not very strong are probably of no use. Materials you provide should please be cleaned beforehand so that there is minimal smells and no sticky residues. In most cases this just involves a good rinse under the tap and being left to dry naturally. Materials can be brought, bagged up, to the Students Union Reception in Student Central.
The first workshop is on 14 Sept, followed by 28 September, 5 & 19 October, 9, 23 & 30 November, and 7 & 14 December. If you know of any students that might be interested, then please ask them to get in contact with Chris Wilson c.wilson4@bradford.ac.uk

We've been reshuffling the Reading Room, so no new Object this week. If you missed any over the summer, why not take a look now? We explored the powerful meanings behind the University's mace and coat of arms, told the story of a little woven bag that is key to the life of a remarkable woman, toured 1930s Yorkshire by bicycle, found out more about the University's theatre and covered two more episodes in J.B. Priestley's life: the Great War and his nuclear disarmament campaigning.
