New. Children's Christmas Party 2006

The Christmas Party for children (up to about 14 years of age) will be held in the Communal Building on Saturday 2nd December 2006 from 14.30 to 17.30. Children and grandchildren of all staff and students of the University will be welcome.

Due to the generous sponsorship of Sodexho, the University catering suppliers, the cost has been kept to £3.00 per child. Children should be taken to main reception in the communal building preferably between 14.15 and 14.30, and thence to the main dance area. The younger (less than 8) and older children will then have separate activities in the first instance according to the programme below.

There is no specified age limit for children attending; however, children less than 5 years old must be accompanied throughout by a parent (or suitable deputy); indeed all parents/guardians are encouraged to attend and help with the games, tea and general supervision of the children. In the event of any minor (hopefully) accidents, St John's Ambulance Brigade nurses will be on hand. Tea and biscuits will be available to all parents and helpers in the relative safety of the lounge area for a small charge.

Full details and a reply slip are at: http://www.brad.ac.uk/briefing/christmas.htm

We hope to see you all at the party!

New. Geoff Taylor

It was with deep regret that we learnt of Geoff Taylor’s sudden death on Tuesday evening, 7th November 2006. Geoff was with the University for 13 years and was a key member of the capital works team with Estates & Facilities.

During his time with the Department, Geoff’s architectural flair, personality and management skill saw the completion of many successful building projects on the city campus and at the School of Management where he sympathetically renovated old accommodation to meet the challenges of a modern Business School. He also managed the construction of the Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation which he completed in 2004, a fine example of modern architecture which incorporates all good principles of sustainable development and stands proud at the top of Richmond Building.

I will personally miss Geoff’s keen eye and advice on design and architectural issues and also miss his dry sense of humour which diffused many a heated site meeting. This was never more evident than in the early stages of the design and construction of the Institute of Cancer Therapeutics and the Norcroft Conference Centre. Sadly illness meant he left the project last December and it is regrettable that he will not see his vision occupied.

He is a great loss to us. May he rest in peace and be assured that his architectural flair and vision will live on in the buildings he created.

The funeral is to take place at 10.45 am on Friday 17th November at St Mark’s Church, Utley then at Oakworth crematorium.

New. School of Social & International Coffee Morning in Memory of Cathy Chapman

Wednesday 22 November 11.00 - 2.00, Pemberton Foyer

SSIS are holding a Coffee Morning in memory of Cathy Chapman to raise funds for Macmillan Nurses and Cancer Research.

Tea/coffee, home-made cakes and biscuits will be on sale. Handmade cards many of which Cathy made to raise money will also be on sale.

Please come along and support this event, alternatively donations can be made in BCID throughout the week.

Cathy had worked at the University for 12 years, firstly on the 'mobile reserve' in various departments of the University, moving to the Department of Applied Social Studies nine years ago and for the past six years as Secretary in the Bradford Centre for International Development, in the School of Social and International Studies.

Cathy was an enthusiastic, committed, team player who always had the welfare of the students and the University at heart.

The Coffee morning was something Cathy was planning but sadly didn't get the opportunity to organise.

Arts on Campus

New. Theatre in the Mill - this week

Sideshow
Institute for Crazy Dancing
Thursday 16th, Friday 17th & Saturday 18th November | 7.30pm

Tickets £6.50/£4

The Institute for Crazy Dancing is in a constant process of crafting treasure hunts across cities and over mountains. This sideshow is part of that endeavour. We don’t know what will be illuminated in this new phase of Persuasion, but we hope it will be seductive enough to pique your interest in the pursuit of the treasure . . .

There will be at least one Precarious Balance, a Still Life (or even two), an Extravaganza and a good sprinkling of Crazy Dancing. We are currently in negotiation with the Leaning on a Lamp Post Band - who may make an appearance.
