New Joint Negotiating Committee for Higher Education Staff (JNCHES) convened on 15 July for the final meeting of the HE pay negotiations for 2009-10.
At that meeting the employers made an improved and final pay offer of a 0.5% increase to all points on the single pay spine from 1st August 2009. This followed a previous offer of 0.4% tabled on 19th May.
In addition to the pay offer UCEA re-iterated its offer to work with all HE trade unions on a range of issues through three joint working groups. These will cover:
With the exception of Unite, the trade unions have not yet responded to the offer. Unite advised UCEA that they wished to register a 'failure to agree' and that the offer would now be presented to their executive committee which meets during the week commencing Monday 20th July.
The other trade unions have advised UCEA that they will now go back to their various executive bodies with the offer. Since each union has its own consultation process and timetable it is likely that this process could run through until the end of August with the effect that any uplift in pay may not occur until September at the earliest (back-dated to 1st August 2009).
I will write to colleagues with the outcome of the trade unions' consultation processes as and when they become known to us.

You are invited to attend a Presentation on Tuesday 4 August, John Stanley Bell Lecture Theatre at 12noon on the findings of the Image and Perception Research 2009.
To assess the impact of recent changes, gauge our status amongst current prospects and inform future developments, the University commissioned Opinion Panel to conduct research – a review of existing research, a quantitative phase and a follow-up qualitative phase - with potential undergraduate and postgraduate students (both home and international), parents, education influencers such as teachers and careers advisors, international influencers such as international agents and local employers.
A presentation by Opinion Panel on Image and Perception 2009 will include findings from the quantitative and qualitative phase of the study. The presentation will begin at 12noon for 45minutes, there will be 15minutes allocated for questions after this. The final half hour (1pm - 1.30pm) will be dedicated to findings from the Employer Group.
Given the wide reach of the survey, we would strongly advise that you view the full findings to prepare any questions for discussion.
