New. Joint Statement from the AUT and the University

Information has now been released by the AUT and UCEA following their discussions with the General Secretary of the TUC, Brendan Barber. The AUT and UCEA have agreed to strongly recommend proposals to their respective constituencies with a view to resolving the current dispute. The proposals are set out in the 'Framework Agreement for the Modernisation of Pay Structures' available on www.aut.org.uk (external link, will open in a new browser window) or www.ucea.ac.uk (external link, will open in a new browser window)

The proposals will be formally recommended to the AUT Executive and in a resolution to AUT Council which meets next week, from 24-27 March in Scarborough. If the AUT Council approves the proposals, it will recommend them to members in a ballot to be conducted in the first 3 weeks of April. Council can suspend or call off industrial action in the interim. Until Council reaches a decision on the proposals, the AUT is advising its members that the action short of a strike remains in force.

UCEA subscribers will meet on 26 March to discuss the outcome of the AUT Council.

Whilst this initiative is being considered, the University will be taking no action to withhold any payment from staff participating in action short of strike. The University acknowledges the restraint and professionalism that academic and related staff have exercised whilst participating in industrial action.

The AUT appreciates the decision of the University not to deduct payments from the salaries of members undertaking action short of a strike. In the light of this, and of the recent positive developments in the national negotiations, whilst the action continues the AUT is advising its members to exercise their judgement in order to ensure, as far as possible, that the current problems arising from the dispute, particularly as they affect students, are not exacerbated.

Both the AUT and the University are hopeful that the proposal will be acceptable by the membership of both parties and lead to the resolution of the current dispute. Information will be conveyed as soon as it is received.
