BriefingNow entering its eighth year, the National Student Survey (NSS) starts again today at the University of Bradford.
Click for more information and a link to NSS PowerPoint slides to display in lectures.
For the first time this year, the survey can now be completed on smart phones, making it even more accessible. Why not invite students to get out their phones at the start of a lecture and complete the survey there and then.
Details of response rates will be circulated in the coming weeks.
Background information
The NSS is a survey of mostly final year undergraduates in England, Northern Ireland, Wales and some institutions in Scotland. FE colleges with directly funded higher education students in England are also included. The survey is part of the revised system of quality assurance for higher education, which replaces subject review by the QAA, and is designed to run alongside the QAA institutional audit to generate more detailed public information about teaching quality. The NSS is commissioned by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) on behalf of all the funding bodies. Ipsos MORI, an independent research company, administers the survey.

Following a recent employment tribunal claim centred around recruitment it has been recommended to the University that we need to be tighter in terms of the paperwork completed for shortlisting and interviewing. As a result of this we have updated our current recruitment documentation.
Please note that each Matrix now contains a scoring mechanism to be used when shortlisting and interviewing. These forms must be completed in full and returned to HR with each recruitment campaign you do.
These will be available on our website with immediate effect. If you would like any additional support/guidance in how to use both the shortlisting and interview matrix then please contact Alexa Copley, a.copley@bradford.ac.uk or ext.6016.

The National HE STEM programme, now in its final year, is supporting approximately 400 projects across the country. Out of the 99 Universities in England and Wales, by the end of last year, the University of Bradford had been fortunate to secure funding for 14 of these projects, substantially higher than the average for an HEI - and yet this month this has nearly doubled that number to 27.
All HE STEM projects which have been running during 2010-11 were invited to apply for funds to enable them to share their practice and support other HEIs to use their models and ideas. Many departments in Bradford then took up the subsequent call to submit proposals to ‘adopt’ some of these successful ideas, resulting in an additional 13 HE STEM projects, all to be launched shortly.
The original 14 projects will be showcasing their work in The Atrium on 8 February
Thursday 26 January 2012 at 2.00 pm in D2, Richmond Building
This presentation will take place prior to ISC business and will focus on the results of the second student survey of IT services conducted in 2011 and the practical steps that we are taking to listen to our students and improve their experience. This is now a bi-annual survey conducted by independent research agency. We have comparator data from Bradford as well as a benchmark view as we share the survey format with Sheffield University. We want to keep the University informed, be open about the challenges we face, and demonstrate our “can do” approach. We will present the student feedback, talk about some of the plans that are already in place to respond, and identify some of the opportunities as we embark on further physical refurbishments of learning spaces in 2012 and the need for continuing investment in the virtual estate.
Please also see: http://www.brad.ac.uk/lss/it-services/survey/
The presentation will be by Priscilla Preston, Head of Customer Services and Graham Hill, Director of IT Services, Learner Support Services
All welcome, please confirm your attendance by emailing Pat Henshaw, secretary to ISC, email: p.c.henshaw@bradford.ac.uk.
The Atrium in the Richmond Building is the focal point of life on the City Campus and the first thing most visitors see. Lots of people want to use it for activities that can conflict. We get complaints about the events that take place there, and about the ones we don't allow.
Now, you have an opportunity to tell us what sort of place you'd like the Atrium to be. Please go to https://www.surveys.bradford.ac.uk/atrium and complete the questionnaire. Although we can't grant every wish, your views will help to shape new usage guidelines for this important space.
