This innovative and exciting programme allows students to work towards a recognised certificate in Management (awarded by the Institute of Leadership and Management, part of the City and Guilds group). Students need to be participating in an activity for about 10 hours per week. These activities can range from being a member of a sports club to being a student on placement, as well as having a part time job. Registration closes on the 31st October 2002, and students must register via the web: www.insightplus.co.uk. The scheme costs £49, but £25 will be refunded to successful students upon completion of the programme. Invitation to a celebration of 21st Century ScienceAround 1675 Archbishop Ussher and others calculated that the Creation of the Universe started around 9am on Monday the 23rd October 4004 BC. Today science has separated itself from belief and now we know that the Universe was born around 15 Gigayears ago. Ussher tried to be a serious scientist in his day. Look at the Armagh Observatory web site www.arm.ac.uk/history/ussher.html. You are invited to an evening to celebrate the richness of 21st Century Science that underpins our understanding of the age of the Universe and would be appreciated by Archbishop Ussher. Please put the date in your diary - Wednesday 23rd October, D4 Richmond Building from 6.30pm - and please consider volunteering to give a short relevant presentation. So far we have Professor Mark Pollard on dating and John Baruch on the redshift conundrum. It is hoped to include Fred Hoyle's contribution to understanding the age of the Sun and others.
