General University notices

New. Entries to the briefing - guidelines

As the new term starts and entries are coming in thick and fast this is a reminder of how to make the best from your Staff Briefing entry:

Items should be sent to: briefing@bradford.ac.uk

Deadline is 12 noon every Friday. Items received after this time will be included at the Editor's discretion.

Items should be short and to the point - with links to further details within your website wherever possible. Try and keep to 150 words max. Longer items will carry a short notice in the email version with a link to the full version on the web version.

A contact number and email should always be included should colleagues have any questions or queries.

Note that a paper version of the briefing also exists for those without access to email or the web. Again, the shorter the item the better as space is limited.

Any questions, comments or queries get in touch: briefing@bradford.ac.uk or call ext: 6529.

Thanks.

New. Visual Identity 2006 - Update

Firstly, thanks to all who responded to the original communication about the development of our new corporate identity. The views and comments expressed were very encouraging and practical. We were very excited about the overwhelming support for the new visual style.
It has become clear that everyone is quite keen to use the new style and the new logo! As such we felt it important to let you know of some important deadlines and ‘go live’ elements of this project.

We also hope this will help answer some of the questions we have been receiving.

Go to http://www.brad.ac.uk/corpcomms/visid/ for our FAQ and if you have any further comments or questions or get in touch.

Head of Corporate Communications

New. Re-vamped undergraduate fees and financial support website is up and running

The information on our website about fees, financial support and bursaries at the University of Bradford has been totally updated and revamped. As well as all the financial facts for home, full-time undergraduate students, sections have been added with information about support for EU and part-time students. This will be kept updated with any new information about fees and funding and should be a comprehensive source of information about financial support for both staff and students.

Go to www.bradford.ac.uk/tuitionfees to have a look or access the information from the button on the University’s external homepage.

Please take the time to look through the site and if you have any comments or feedback you can contact Sarah Verbickas, the Student Bursaries Officer, on ex 6637 or email s.l.verbickas@bradford.ac.uk

New. The Graduate School - relocation

The Graduate School has relocated from the Richmond Building to Phoenix NE. We are in the new section of Phoenix with the glass porch, at the bottom of the amphitheatre, behind the JB Priestley Library. Our offices are on the first floor, and teaching will take place downstairs. Our teaching arrangements and programmes have not been changed due to this move.

Dr Judi Sture is now leading The Graduate School and its programmes (the Social Sciences Research Training Programme and the Short Courses for Research). If you have any questions, please contact either Judi on academic matters, or Julie Easterbrook, the School Co-ordinator, on administrative matters.

New. Yorkshire in Bloom - Silver award for University

The University was recently awarded a Silver certificate and was commended for our entry of the School of Management in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition. The result was particularly pleasing since this is the first time we have entered. Our entry was in section 12 - Universities, Colleges and Further Education establishments. We hope to enter again next year.

Here are the comments of the judges:

BRADFORD UNIVERSITY - SILVER

The grounds of Heaton Mount are well maintained, with a variety of mature trees and shrubs surrounding the beautiful buildings.
The lawns are particularly well maintained and the pond is an attractive feature and also encourages wildlife.
Increasing the variety of shrubs to give more colour and scent would further enhance the landscape.

SECTION A FLORAL DISPLAYS

The judges were impressed by:

  • The use of colour at the front of the building

Suggested future development - The flower beds could be increased in size, and greater impact created by using larger plants

SECTION B PERMANENT LANDSCAPING

The judges were impressed by:

  • The regular maintenance of shrubs and trees
  • The standard of lawn care, with lawns edged and in good condition
  • The use of grass clippings and chippings as mulch

Suggested future development - the introduction of more colourful and scented shrubs would add to the existing tapestry of green

SECTION C ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

The judges were impressed by:

  • The cleanliness and tidiness of the paths and car parks

New. From the Press Office - Pitch ideas for science and history TV programmes

The World Congress of Science and Factual Producers holds its annual conference this November in Manchester.  One of the sessions is designed to give Northern academics (at postgraduate level and higher) the chance to pitch their ideas for science and history programmes to some of the biggest names in TV production in the world.

We're hoping to turn up some new television faces - the stars of science and history programming for the future . . .

Each academic will have about three minutes to pitch their perfect programme idea, on a one to one basis to about ten top producers, and there will be opportunities to meet other documentary makers away from the formal session.

If you think you might be interested please contact Gareth Williams at: gareth.williams@granadamedia.com

Please include contact details and a couple of lines on the topic that you think could make a good documentary.

New. ICT Servicedesk

As we begin another academic year can I just take this opportunity to remind colleagues that the accepted route for all IT and telephony related faults, job requests or enquiries is via ICT Servicedesk on ext: 3333 or email to ictservicedesk@bradford.ac.uk.

Please help us to help you by NOT trying to contact members of the ICT Support teams direct; whilst understandable at times, this does not always achieve the result you desire and leaves us with no audit trail of your fault report or job request.

With many thanks in advance for your co-operation.

New. The Great Tablecloth Amnesty

A recent audit in MCC showed that since we first produced the burgundy table clothes, 7 are no longer in our possession and we have no record of their whereabouts, meaning that on the forthcoming Open Day some stands will have to go without, which as you can imagine doesn't look very professional.

We have a record of all the cloths signed out for Freshers' events (if you haven't returned them already please do so asap) but we were also hoping that everyone could take a look around their offices to see if they have any stored anywhere, and if so if they could be returned asap to D17, Richmond Building (preferably before 2nd October so they can be cleaned in time for Open Day on October 7th).

No questions asked etc . . .!

If think you have a tablecloth on long term loan from MCC please let Liz Hough know for her records. It may be that we have to have it back for the 7th if we don't get any missing ones handed in.

Thanks in advance.

Liz Hough, Marketing Officer, ext: 3034

New. Meeting room location change

Meetings in Chesham C2.06 moving to Chesham B0.29

You may recall that during the summer we have been using Chesham C2.06 as a temporary meeting room to replace D51 - Jenny Laffan Room. With the start of teaching, C2.06 needs to revert to its function as a teaching room so all meeting room bookings for that resource (originally D51) will now be moved to Chesham B0.29 Mezanine: this is accessable from B 0 corridor. If you go from the Entrance foyer/coffee bar past the lifts, through double doors and take a right you are on the right corridor. Go half way down and on the right hand side you will see the door to B0.29. This leads to a foyer with a staircase leading up to B0.29 Mez

Please note there is no wheelchair access to this room so if this is a requirement of anyone attending a meeting an alternative meeting room will be needed. Please also note you will need your staff card to access this room.

This change of location is effective immediately as we need to return C2.06 to teaching for Monday morning.

A show produced within 24 hours? Are you crazy?

The answer to that is basically YES! And that is why the BUTG 24 hour show is still running after so many years. The trouble is, we are running out of shows to perform - so will we be hotting it up with Grease? Or cooling it down with Chicago? You will just have to come along and see for yourself.

To get involved (acting, dancing, singing, costumes, tech, general dogsbodies) just turn up at the Theatre in the Mill on Friday 29th September at 7pm - bring sensible black clothing and be prepared for a long night!

The finished product will be presented in all its glory on Saturday 30th September at 7.30pm - tickets available from Theatre in the Mill on ext: 3200 or email: theatre@bradford.ac.uk

And then we will all go to bed . . .
