For all staff

For all staff involved in Clearing, departments or centrally.

There has been some confusion as to what the Helpline Training Days actually cover, and whether they are suitable for departmental staff or only those staffing the Helpline. The answer is both. Liz Lewis, the University;s Education Liaison Adviser has put together a document for staff toexplain how the Clearing Training Days will run and what central helpline and departmental staff will be expected to do over the Clearing period.

Please read the following document, and encourage all staff within your department who may be involved in Clearing to do the same.

Changes in Research Council Accounting Procedures

There have recently been stories in the media about changes being introduced by the NERC and EPSRC in the way in which grants will be paid due to changes being introduced in government accounting procedures to introduce Resource Account Management. The Research Office has found out from the Research Councils the following information.

BBSRC Have no plans at present for making any changes. However, there will be a slight delay on payment of awards made in July and on some of its initiative schemes.

EPSRC Has introduced an average delay of 6 months on payment of new grants. However, it is open to persuasion to let projects start earlier for ‘good reasons’, though it is not possible to discover what exactly could be counted as a ‘good reason’. For small grants, for example the Small Travel Grants scheme, payment will not be subject to a 6 month delay.

ESRC No delays at present. It has operated under a different accounting procedure from the rest of the Research Councils and due to this, there should be no changes to the timing of the payment of grants.

MRC There are no changes envisaged at present. However, there is talk that changes may be introduced at an unspecified later date.

NERC Due to both the changes in government accounting procedure and a £13.2 million shortfall, no new standard research grants will be issued until December. No applications for standard research will be accepted until the 1 December closing date. There should still be competitions held for Small Grants and Consortium Grants schemes and the Fellowships competition. Recruitment of PhD and Masters students in October should not be affected.

PPARC No plans at present to introduce any changes to the way in which it pays grants.

For any further information please contact Sean Kelly, Research Officer, Research Office. Ext: 5232 www.bradford.ac.uk/admin/rsil
