National Student Employment Week The 1st National Student Employment Week will take place between 4th - 8th March 2002. The event is part of a national event initiated by NASES (National Association of Student Employment Staff). It aims to highlight the existence of students as a resource for employers and also the existence of services such as the JobShop as a recruitment tool. The programme at the University includes various presentations and workshops, which will help students to see what job opportunities are available and also give them assistance in putting together effective job applications. We will be holding a prize draw with items donated by local employers. Prizes for students to win include a CD player, a signed Bradford City Football, and a return flight to Amsterdam, Paris or Brussels. Any member of staff who's always wanted to know what we do would be welcome to drop in and see us. We are located in Student Information Services in the Communal Building. STRATEGIES FOR EMPLOYMENT:
Job Searching and Successful Applications Producing a CV or completing an application form is just the first stage in the job searching process. Effective written applications require you as a job seeker to understand what the employer is looking for, and to recognise how your own skills and personal qualities fit with what the employer needs. This information has to be presented in a concise and easy to read format - if you want to make it through to the next stage of the process, the job interview. This presentation deals with how employers select applicants for interview, the value of researching both the job and employer, how to match your experience and personal qualities to the position you apply for, and the key importance of visual presentation in producing an effective CV, covering letter and application form. Once selected for interview, meaning you have met the employer's initial selection criteria, you then have an opportunity to explore in depth whether you have the necessary experience, skills and personal qualities required for the job. A successful interview may result in a job offer, or possibly an invitation to attend an Assessment Centre, where candidates take part in a variety of activities designed to demonstrate their skills and personal qualities. You will be introduced to the different strategies you can adopt for interviews, including competency based interviews, what to expect at an Assessment Centre, how to prepare, and how to perform effectively. If you would like to attend this workshop, please either complete the on-line booking form at: http://www.brad.ac.uk/research/pgcourses/Form.html, e-mail: staffdev@bradford.ac.uk or call us on extension 3102.

Staff Private Telephone Scheme It is some time ago now, since the original launch of the private telephone scheme for staff, and colleagues of more recent vintage may not be aware of the scheme at all. Hence, this is just a reminder to all staff, that if you wish to make personal calls from University extension numbers, that this can be facilitated via membership of the private telephone scheme. The scheme allows members to use any telephone on the University campus, with all calls being recharged to your own confidential Personal Account Number (PAN); your seven digit PAN must be inputted before a call can be connected. Further details of the scheme can be found on the application form, which is available from the Voice Communications Department, room 01.10, J B Priestley Building, or alternatively at: www.brad.ac.uk/lss/telephones |
