Longside A car park – temporary closure for British Science Festival

The Longside A Car Park located outside the front of Student Central and the delivery bay side of Phoenix NE on Longside Lane will be closed to normal permit holders between 6am Thursday 8 September and 5pm Friday 16 September 2011 for the British Science Festival.

The area will be used for media trucks, members of the press and guest speakers for the event. During this period staff and student access cards will not operate the car park barrier as the car park will be in use 24 hours a day and be a restricted area. Special British Science Festival permits will be issued for authorised users during this period.

The exception to this restriction will be disabled users with blue badges or University disabled permit holders who will be able to get access to park in front of Student Central. Students' Union mini buses and Estates works vehicles will also be permitted.

Normal permit holders are advised to park in either Shearbridge Green (off Great Horton Road adjacent to Unique Sports) or the Longside B (off Longside Lane near to The Green) car parks during the festival.

Induction talks from Student Activities@UBU

Running an induction programme for new or returning students? Would you like someone from Student Activities@UBU to spend 5-10 minutes to share details of the exciting range of volunteering opportunities we have to offer your students?

These can be general talks, subject, skills or career pathway specific, just let us know the suitable emphasis for your group at the time of booking.

Our talks are always interactive, and well received by students.

All we need to know is the date, time and location of the talk and any required area of focus.  Please email this information to ucan@bradford.ac.uk

We have now combined our community volunteering opportunities (UCAN) with on-campus projects (previously ‘Ecoversity Student’) and UBU Sports and Societies under the one Student Activities banner to make it even easier for students to access the various services on offer.

Departure of Chris Rolfe- Moore

The Counselling Service is very sad to say goodbye to Chris Rolfe- Moore who has been associated with the Service since she started as a Counsellor in training in 1993.  During her time in the Counselling Service Chris has provided a specialist Eating Disorder service and conducted research into the condition within the student and staff population. Latterly she has worked as a full time Counsellor in the team.  Chris will be leaving at the end of September to move to pastures new, and goes with our thanks for all her work and  very best wishes for the future.

Our Police Engagement Officer is here to help

As the University's Police Engagement Officer Sue Whitemore's job is to ensure that all staff and students are aware of her details and availability for help, support or advice when required.

Please be aware and pass information to students that there is a regular 'contact Point' in Student Central every Wednesday 1-3pm for anyone to drop in. Sue's details are for everyone to share so please encourage colleagues/students to email, text or ring me for help. (They can remain anonymous).

Staff can invite Sue into their class/lectures to deliver a 'personal safety' talk (5 - 20 mins or longer).  This helps students to be familiar with Sue and often makes it more likely that they will make direct contact if necessary.

If you have any concerns with a student let Sue know, whether it's their general attitude, extreme views, possible drink/drug abuse, personal situation.

SCIM needs interesting glass, ceramic or metal objects for their Observational Drawing modules. Any medium to large size objects of unusual or interesting shapes, in coloured and clear glass, copper, tin or brass, would be much appreciated. Ideally these items would have few labels, or labels that can be soaked away. Think spirits bottles, vases, fishbowls, paperweights, ashtrays, drinking glasses, tankards, jugs, kettles, carafes, pitchers, bowls, ornaments, candle sticks etc. Any condition!

If you do have anything to donate, please drop it at the SCIM Tech Support Loans Counter in Horton D2.20.

Request for host families

City of Bradford YMCA  is now the official Bradford  partner of Global Xchange, and we are now embarking on our first international cultural exchange project between Bradford and the Bohol Province, Philippines.

In the autumn ten volunteers from the UK and ten from the Philippines, all aged between 18 and 22, will spend the three months in Bohol then three months in Bradford, living, working and learning in these communities. The volunteers will live with host families in Bradford from January to March 2012 (12 weeks), and we are now looking for expressions of interest from people willing to be hosts. We are also looking for Volunteer Work Placements throughout the city. In both cases a UK volunteer and a Filipino volunteer will be placed together, to live and work as partners.

If you are interested in being a host family or a volunteer placement for two volunteers please contact: Kelly Dobson, Programme Supervisor: kelly.dobson@bradfordymca.org.uk Tel: 01274 735 305 or 07875 254 202.  Once you confirm your interest Kelly will arrange to meet you and you can talk through what’s involved. There’s no obligation to commit and it’s an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have.
