Celebrating Thirty Years of Commonweal Collection at Bradford
Commonweal Collection, an independent peace library, has been based at
the J.B. Priestley Library for thirty years, providing a unique resource
to the University and the city. This long and fascinating history is on
show in a display of photographs, posters and leaflets in the J.B. Priestley
Library Atrium until the New Year. The display also illustrates the Commonweal
archives of peace movements, recently donated to the University's Special
Collections to enable us to bring these unique resources to a wider audience.

Heating in the Richmond Building
There is currently an issue with overheating in some rooms in Richmond
building, on the Richmond wing. This will unfortunately exist until the
cladding works have been completed.
A new computerised heating control system was installed in the Richmond
Building during the summer, whilst this installation has the capability
to accurately control the environment within the building such is the
efficiency of the new cladding it is leading to overheating in some areas,
because of the discrepancy between clad and unclad areas. The control
system has to respond to the lower temperatures (parts of the building
were the cladding has not been completed) thus overheating others which
have already been clad. Because of the significant difference of levels
of insulation between the two areas, it is only possible to make limited
adjustments to balance out the temperatures.
When the cladding work has been completed, the internal temperatures
will settle down and will be hopefully uniform down the length of the
building.
Apologies for any inconvenience caused during the current works.

e-Strategy project - questionnaire
for all staff (reminder)
We need your help!
Between now and the end of March 2006 the Content Management System project
(e-Strategy project number 12) will be looking at how the University currently
manages, and communicates, information. Following a phase of research
with colleagues across the University we will be looking at whether it
is possible to provide an IT system (or systems) to assist or manage these
process in the future.
The initial phase of our research is a questionnaire, and we would like
to encourage as many staff as possible, from all Planning Units and at
all levels, to take part. It shouldn't take long, and the results of the
questionnaire will help inform the questions for our Focus Groups that
are taking place between January and March 2006.
A link to the questionnaire is available on the home page of our project
website. Have a look at: http://cmsproject.brad.ac.uk/
We will accept questionnaires up to lunchtime on Monday 12 December.
If you have any comments or queries email us at: cms-team@bradford.ac.uk

Royal Institute of Philosophy Seminar
Wednesday 7 December at 4pm, Mezz 2, Graduate School
Nick Jones, from Leeds University, will talk about "Morality and
Taboo Jokes"
Synopsis: Is it morally acceptable to tell or laugh at racist or sexist
jokes? This is a very emotive question, and one which provokes a wide
variety of conflicting intuitions. (To give just one example, some people
believe that racist jokes are morally unobjectionable because one is "only
joking"; while others hold that racist jokes are morally problematic precisely
because they don't take racism seriously.) Obviously at least some of
these conflicting intuitions must be wrong-headed - which, if any, of
them can be justified by well-reasoned argument? In this talk, I am going
to present an overview and a critical evaluation of some of the arguments
philosophers have put forward recently in trying to answer the question
at the head of this abstract.
