Guidelines on the volume of assessment for undergraduate units and programmes of study' and 'Guidelines on the definition and use of formative and summative assessment' 'Guidelines on the Volume of Assessment for Undergraduate Units and Programmes of Study' and a supporting document 'Guidelines on the Definition and Use of Formative and Summative Assessment' have been approved by the Senate on 10th October 2001, with immediate effect. These are intended to serve as a framework within which unit and course designers will work and which will inform Course Approval and Review Teams (CARTs). The 'Guidelines on the Volume of Assessment' are based on existing practice in many Schools and have been the subject of wide consultation within the University and Bradford College. They are not regulations and minor variations from them will be permitted. Significant variations will also be permitted, provided that the CART accepts the justification which will need to be provided for such variations. Both documents are available on the Web at http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/acsec/QA_Hbk/QAH3_0toc.html Further information is available from Alison Carass in ASSU on ext: 3897.
Shorts of Silver, Hearts of Gold Tickets are £6.50 and £4. Back in the mid-seventies Fanyia Williams the Fellow in Theatre dreamt of a dedicated theatre on Bradford's arts free, science based campus - a dream that gave students, the community and professionals the opportunity to produce innovative and pioneering theatre. The dream was realised when an old table tennis room at the back of an old university building was turned into a studio theatre and opened by Alan Ayckbourn on 10th November 1976. From that day on Theatre in the Mill has consistently championed new work, developed and worked with nationally renowned theatre companies and played an important stepping stone in the progression of many great careers. SILVER SHORTS continues that tradition with a number of short pieces recently written or devised, by students, ex-students and professionals as well as Mill staff. The show is supported by the fantastic technical crew. Pieces include:

University Deadlines for Submission of Mitigating Circumstances The Senate at its meeting on 10th October 2001 approved a change to the University deadlines for the submission of mitigating circumstances. The increasing number of cases of mitigating circumstances being received from students is making the current deadline (at least two working days in advance of the appropriate meeting of the Board of Examiners') difficult to manage in logistical terms. In many cases, mitigating circumstances are now reviewed prior to the meetings of Boards of Examiners by mitigating circumstances sub-committees of the Boards, in line with recommended good practice. This makes it even more important that circumstances are reported in good time. The Senate agreed that the deadline for the submission of mitigating circumstances might be brought forward thus enabling Departments to process cases more efficiently whilst still allowing students sufficient time to make their case. This arrangement has received the support of representatives of the Students' Union. From the academic year 2001/02, therefore, the deadline stipulated for the submission of mitigating circumstances will be at least seven working days in advance of the appropriate meeting of the Board of Examiners. The updated regulation is available on the University's web-server at http://www.brad.ac.uk/admin/acsec/QA-Hbk/QAH5-11.html#personal-circumstances.
