BriefingOn 30 November there is likely to be large scale disruption to public transport and public services as the trades unions are planning a day of mass strike action.
Staff who are unable to get into work either because of transport difficulties or caring responsibilities will need to negotiate with their managers about how they will make good the time they take off as a result of these issues. Ordinarily staff should either take a day’s leave, a day’s unpaid leave or if they are able to, work from home.
Members of staff are reminded that all messages sent from University email accounts are subject to the rules set out in both the Data Protection and Freedom of Information acts. As such staff should not send anything in an email which they would not be happy to see published.

A professional photographer will be spending the day on 29 November, taking photographs of the new School of Health Studies building and facilities. During this time it is likely that he will take generic photographs in public areas and it is inevitable that students, staff and visitors will be caught on camera. The photographs will be used in recruitment material whether that be published in a booklet/poster or online for example. If you especially do not wish your photo to be used and you notice the photographer then please speak to him direct and he will ensure that you are not included. Any queries please direct to Claire Pryke at c.v.pryke@bradford.ac.uk
The Royal Academy of Engineering, under the HE STEM Programme, has funded the training of students to become ambassadors of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths)across all HE providers in the Yorkshire, Humber and the Northeast regions of England. Designed and organised by Kerry Baker and following on from the London Engineering Project, the training teaches students of STEM subjects how to communicate with young people, teachers and parents about STEM subjects, STEM pathways and STEM careers and sign post these people to further sources of information. Volunteers of the British Science Festival 2011 received this training and student ambassadors from the School of Engineering, Design and Technology will be undertaking the training in January 2012. There is still room for your department to benefit from the 90 minute session so please contact k.baker2@bradford.ac.uk if you would like to know more.

Duncan Petrie
Over the last decade, the education and training of practitioners in film and television in the UK has been dominated by a skills agenda embodied by Skillset/UKFC training strategy ‘A Bigger Future’ which was initiated in 2003. Whatever the pros and cons of the strategy, it paid no attention to the historical role and contribution made by films schools in the UK and elsewhere, a context that arguably could have informed the policy in quite useful ways.
In this presentation Duncan Petrie will attempt to identify elements of that missing context by considering the development and role of some of the more high profile films schools in Britain, notably the National Film and Television School, the London Film School and the Royal College of Art.
Professor Duncan Petrie has authored six books including The British Cinematographer (BFI, 1996), Screenining Scotland (BFI, 2000) and Shot in New Zealand (Random House, 2007). He has also edited many books, most recently The Cinema of Small Nations (Edinburgh University Press, 2007), co-edited by Mette Hjort. He is co-principal editor of the Journal of the British Cinema and Television and is a member of the editorial board of Studies in Australasian Cinema.
