European-Asia Workshop on "ICT for Product Life Cycle Design/Management/Logistic"

in Sanya, China, January 2008

Innovation is becoming more and more dependent on global networks of resources and skills. Research plays a critical role in the innovation process, providing a base of scientific and technological knowledge to help develop environmentally conscious products, processes, and services. This relationship between research and innovation can be ensured by collaboration between distributed teams and organizations across the globe. Knowledge stemming from this collaboration supports the generation of ideas, facilitates the product life cycle design/management/logistics, and improves existing products.

In order to foster collaboration and leverage the research outcomes from these and other programs, Asia-EU researchers are holding a workshop at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Shanghai China, January 2008). This Asia-EU workshop aims at fostering research cooperation between some EU and Asia countries (France, UK, China, Thailand, Nepal, Singapore, Japan…) researchers and research students in the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Computer Science Research for Product Life Cycle Design, Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and Life Cycle Logistics.

There are a lot of research efforts being carried out both in Asia and EU related to such issues as product lifecycle management (product life cycle design/assessment/ simulation) and life cycle logistics (supply chains and reverse supply chains). These domains are of growing importance, as witnessed by

This research addresses fundamental and applied interoperability issues pertaining to the modeling of complex objects and systems, such as the simulation of supply chain processes, the design of web-based engineering collaboration support systems, and defining semantic and ontology based models for product design/management/logistics integration.

The workshop will explore common areas of interest, and sources of support for co-operative research among Asia and EU research teams. Junior researchers and research students from Asia and EU, working in the area of product life cycle design/management/logistics will also be invited to take part in this workshop, aiming at building long lasting research relationships, following the Asia-Link project EAST-WEST.
