Project Summary

Title of Proposal: Euro-ASia CollaboraTions and NetWorking in Information Engineering System Technology (EAST-WEST)
Programme Strand and Component: Human Resource Development
Duration of the Project: 36 months

Project Abstract:

This project aims to train next generation Asia and EU partners' academic staff to improve the quality of life and services. The objectives are to develop existing and new co-operative teaching, research links and networking among the participating institutes. The links would form a collaborative framework for human resource development by training and upgrading the skills of academic staff and postgraduate students in the area of information engineering technology, while also providing a foundation for fostering new partnerships and reinforcing existing collaborations between EU and Asian institutes.

The project involves six partners, three from the EU, one from China, one from the least developed country South Asia (Nepal), and one from South East Asia (Thailand). The project will facilitate the enhancement and transfer of knowledge and skills of teaching staff and postgraduate students by introducing cutting edge skills and methods in information engineering technology. The programme will involve mobility of academics to and among institutes based in Europe and Asia for education, research, training and internships.

The Project Objectives

The overall objectives of the project are:

  1. To enhance communication, collaboration, cultural awareness and understanding of current and future academic staff and postgraduate students in Higher Educational Institutes in China, Nepal, Thailand and Europe.
  2. To exchange and transfer ideas, views and knowledge among the partners from both EU and Asia.
  3. To set-up new long-term sustainable partnerships between European and Asian Higher Educational Institutes and to reinforce existing partnerships
  4. To promote the EU higher education system in the participating Asian countries in order to enhance the attractiveness of European higher education.
  5. To improve education, research and teaching activities in Information Engineering System Technology in participating institutes in EU and Asia.
  6. To raise awareness of opportunities in the sector and develop links that can ultimately lead to mutually beneficial economic co-operation.

The specific objectives of the project are:

  1. To promote the exchange of experience and encourage knowledge sharing and recognition of study programmes and reciprocal access to higher education in EU and Asia and promote recognition of research and teaching activities of Asian Institutes internationally.
  2. To encourage the creation of a basis for future academic collaborations.
  3. To provide Asian students with a broader choice of opportunities for studying abroad.
  4. To upgrade and enhance educational qualification and teaching & research skills through mobility of research and teaching staff with the provision of home and overseas trainings.
  5. To provide training for PhD and MSc students in emerging practices and methodologies in research and training
  6. To train 200 academic staff through workshops and summer schools
  7. To provide 20 training courses in Asia partner sites
  8. To conduct 30 exchange visits
  9. To organise six workshops at the Asia partner's sites
  10. To develop one new Master course in intelligent information systems
  11. To develop teaching materials in information engineering for the summer school
  12. To research on current issues of Information System Engineering Technology (e.g. intelligent systems, supply chain management, web technologies, etc) and disseminate the research outcomes through publications.
  13. To develop the joint research project (e.g. joint supervision of PhD students) to achieve the benefit for all project stakeholders
