THe church.
Saltaire is a picturesque model Victorian village and has become a tourist attraction, surrounded by hills and woodland. It was meant to be a worker's paradise. I don't think I would quite call it paradise - but it is quaint!
You can take a stroll down by the canal for a picnic - there is a large grassy area perfect for a game of football or just go mad and run around for a while.
As well as Salts Mill the other main place to visit is the United Reform Church, a beautifully ornate Italianate structure. There is a mausoleum attached to the church containing the remains of Sir Titus Salt himself, however when I tried to find it I ended up nosily ascending some stairs I perhaps shouldn't have and nearly got deafened by the daily bell-ringing session! I do not recommend this.
Definitely the place to bring your parents when they come to visit.
Canal in Saltaire.
Saltaire is a purpose-built "model" Victorian industrial village and was built in the nineteenth century by the Victorian philanthropist Sir Titus Salt, to provide self-contained living space for the workers at his woollen mills.
The church was built in the Classical style for 600, erected by Lockwood and Mawson, and was the first public building in the village. It was opened in1859.
The interior is decorated with coloured marble and elaborate panelling, and most of the fittings, such as the oak pews, are the originals. On the South side is the mausoleum where Sir Titus Salt is interred.
