Welcome to the Centre for Applied Social Research

The Centre for Applied Social Research (CASR) is a key entity within the School of Social and International Studies . It is a centre of excellence for the promotion, execution and dissemination of social scientific research and for the application of that research excellence in a wide range of practical areas.

The Centre for Applied Social Research is an organisational response within the University of Bradford to the demand for research expertise and knowledge that can flexibly address the practical needs of policy makers, organizations and third sector actors.

It provides a creative environment for inter-disciplinary collaborative research and a forum for the development of professional and personal competencies.

The Centre brings together researchers from multidisciplinary backgrounds working on a range of contemporary social issues and policy challenges. The Centre has strong local and regional contacts that facilitate the grounding of its work in the concerns of specific agencies and communities. At the same time, the national and international networks of which the Centre is a part ensure a wide range of intellectual and policy perspectives that inform the work of the staff. The Centre provides a distinctive environment for the development of theory and its critical application to policy issues.

The Centre focuses its work around three strategic areas:

  1. Globalisation, Health and Livelihoods .
  2. Identity and Social Diversity .
  3. Families, Personal Lives and Social Care .

These areas provide a fruitful, but not exclusive, focus for the research in the Centre. They provide creative communities of practice within which colleagues can have a close and routine collaborative working experience with colleagues who share their research interests and have complementary competences.

The Centre has a broad range of social science expertise. Its research portfolio is focused on critical and emerging policy themes and the research projects it undertakes are theoretically underpinned and heavily policy-orientated. As well as having a strong local orientation, the Centre has key strengths in international comparative analysis with links to relevant national and international policy bodies.

An overview of the Centre, including it's structure and areas of expertise can be found by visiting our About The Centre page.
