Limited copies of the quarterly Ecoversity newspaper will be produced on paper (sourced from sustainable sources). We have done this to ensure that staff and students who do not have access to email and the internet are able to access it. This method also serves as a promotional tool. As with the University News&Views publication, we recommend that people view the online publication wherever possible.
To reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, the University has introduced a recycling rollout in all offices which includes the removal of desk-side bins. We are replacing standard bins with 'recycling stations'. Environment Manager Ben Tongue is available to discuss this with you and can come to your area to brief groups of staff. Contact Ben via 235440 or email him at b.tongue@bradford.ac.uk .
Following a review of sector best practice, the University is introducing comprehensive centralised waste and recycling facilities that can be emptied daily. Resourcing this is only possible, by freeing cleaners from emptying every desk-side litter bin. Studies show it is possible to reach a 60% recycling rate where centralised facilities have been introduced and desk-side bins removed. Whereas only 15-20% is achieved where centralised facilities have been introduced and desk side bins are left to remain in offices.

The cladding of Richmond Building is a three phase project. The west elevation was clad first as this work had to be completed for the Atrium to de developed. Phases 2 and 3 of the cladding are funded and will be completed in the next few years. The cladding is already improving the thermal performance of the outer shell of the building by reducing the level of solar gain in the summer (from reducing the amount of glazing) and reducing thermal losses in the winter (from the extra insulation).
Longside Lane is temporarily closed at the section near Shearbridge Road, due to the construction of a new private hall of residence.
The atrium is made of ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene), which is a carbon based polymer – another kind of plastic. ETFE has a high corrosion resistance and strength over a wide temperature range and is therefore extremely useful as a building material. ETFE comes in many qualities and the foil used on our Atrium removes 30% of harmful UV rays from the sun.
Catering recycle the coffee grinds in the University composting scheme.
