A delegation from the University of Bradford will travel to Pakistan later this month to help establish a new College there.
The group, led by Professor Geoff Layer, will spend five days on a fact-finding mission with the University's recently installed Chancellor, Imran Khan, to help develop the Namal College’s curriculum, quality assurance, student support systems and administration.
The Namal College, which is being built in the Mianwali District of Pakistan by the Mianwali Development Trust (MDT), was made an Associate College of the University of Bradford in December 2005 when Imran Khan and the University's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chris Taylor, signed a memorandum of understanding.
Professor Geoff Layer, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching at the University of Bradford, said: "We are delighted to be involved in supporting the development of Namal College from its infancy.
"Namal College aims to provide high quality vocational education and training to meet the skills needs of the District and to enhance opportunities particularly to young people after leaving school."
The College is due for completion in April and will be opening to students in September this year. It will initially focus on technical education leading gradually through phased development into higher education.
The University will be involved in the design and development of the curriculum along with assisting to shape the academic plan to meet the needs of the Mianwali District.
The visiting delegation will fly to Pakistan on Monday 27 February for five days. As well as Professor Layer, it will include Alison Darnbrough, Director of Marketing and Corporate Communications, and Dr Mohammed Khan, Associate Dean for International Programmes in the University's School of Engineering, Design and Technology .
The first phase of activity will be to develop detailed action plans for specific subject areas, such as automotive engineering, information technology and construction industries.
The Mianwali District is a disadvantaged area of Pakistan with little industry, poor education opportunities and high unemployment. It is also home to a population of around one million people.
