The IPI. The University's Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation (IPI) has won a contract to operate as a pioneering new centre to help businesses exploit world-class research.
Yorkshire Forward, the regional development agency, announced the IPI would become a Centre of Industrial Collaboration (CIC).
The IPI is now part of the £11million CIC initiative to establish a leading scientific, technical and research resource for industry.
One of the first CICs to be declared was the University's Polymer Engineering Interdisciplinary Research Centre, based in the School of Engineering, Design and Technology.
Now the IPI will appoint a commercial manager to translate the benefits of the University's research and development expertise to business.
IPI Director Paul Thorning said: "The IPI is not yet a year old, but this shows that already we are acknowledged as a world-class facility. The CIC status will help us to become a bridge between regional businesses and the international pharmaceuticals market."
The IPI provides access to advanced analytical facilities and draws upon the very latest computer technology to develop new drug delivery solutions. Yorkshire Forward business development manager Susan Johnson said CICs were a key to creating growth in the region's economy.
She said: "With growing globalisation our businesses can no longer simply compete on cost grounds alone. We need to add value to our region's products and processes.
"Our aim is to transfer knowledge to regional companies, encourage investment by UK and international companies in the region and promote Yorkshire and Humber as the emerging force for technology and innovation."
