Maintenance grants - 2011 entry

Help from the Government

In 2010, new full-time Home students from lower income households will be eligible for a means-tested, non-repayable Maintenance Grant of up to £2,906 a year. The amount you receive will depend on your family's residual income - this is the total value of earnings left after deductions have been made for pension payments and dependent siblings. If that income is less than £25,000 you will be eligible for a full grant worth £2,906. The amount of grant is then decreased on a sliding scale, with students whose residual family income is £50,020 receiving the minimum grant of £50 per year. At a residual income above this figure, students will receive no support.

Grants are payable in three instalments - one at the start of each term. This grant can be used for maintenance or can be paid to the University in order that a full loan for the tuition fee need not be taken out, thus reducing the loan balance once a student has completed their studies.
