Tuition Fees, Scholarships and BursariesNearly all universities in England have now announced that they will charge the maximum tuition fee of £3,375 per year (2011/12) for UK/EU students.
From September 2006 if you are a full-time undergraduate student, you will not have to pay fees before you start university or whilst you are studying. Instead, you will be eligible for a tuition fee loan to cover these costs. This means that you (or your parents/guardians/carers) won't have to find the money before you start your course or whilst you are studying. You will only repay these loans once you have left university and are earning over £15,000. Repayments are small and are linked to your salary, making them more affordable. The more you earn the more you repay off your loan. For example, if your salary is £18,000 per year, the repayments will be around £5.19 per week. Any outstanding loans will be written off after 25 years.
In certain circumstances students may not be eligible for a fee loan and / or maintenance loan for living costs if they already hold an Honours Degree, have had any periods of study in Higher Education prior to the start of their course, or are transferring to a new course. You will need to contact the (External) Student Finance Service to find out what financial help you may be entitled to.
Student loans to help with living costs are also available from the Student Loans Company. If you are a student living away from home and outside of London, the maximum loan you can get is £4,950. If you decide to live at home whilst you are studying the maximum loan is £3,838. The actual amount you will get depends on your family's income and the amount of Maintenance Grant that you receive. For students on the highest levels of Maintenance Grant, the maximum amount of loan available is capped, which has the effect of reducing the amount of loan that has to be repaid. Student Loans for living costs will become repayable only after you have completed your degree, and are earning more than £15,000 per annum. Further information can be obtained from (External) www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance (external link, will open in a new window).
In 2011 new full-time students from lower income households will also be eligible for a non-repayable Maintenance Grant of up to £2,906 a year. How much you will get will depend on your income and that of your family household [ see note ]. If that household income is £25,000 or less, you are likely to be eligible for a full grant worth £2,906. Partial grants will be available for those with a household [ see note ] income of between £25,001 and £50,020. Grants are payable in three instalments – one at the start of each term. This is a grant and is non-repayable.
[ note ] Family income refers to residual family income. This is your gross family income after certain deductions for outgoings such as pension payments or dependant siblings. For further information contact your Student Finance Service, e.g. Student Finance England on 0845 300 5090, or go to the (External) Direct Gov website (external link, will open in a new window).
According to the Government, if you receive the full Maintenance Grant and you are on a course charging the full £3,375 fee, you will also be eligible for at least £338 in financial support from your university or college. This may take the form of a Bursary . The type and amount of financial help will depend on the university or college concerned.
Some students will get more than this, as many universities and colleges are expected to offer financial help worth more than £338. It will be important to speak to the university or college that you are applying to and find out what it offers. Each University’s student advice service will provide information.
