Learning to evaluate and improve the quality of person-centred care for people with dementia.
Dementia Care Mapping (DCM) is a method designed to evaluate quality of care from the perspective of the person with dementia. It is used in formal care settings such as hospitals, care homes and day care. It is based on the philosophy of person centred care, which promotes a holistic approach to care that upholds the personhood of the person with dementia.
The process of using DCM involves briefing staff and clients about DCM in the area to be mapped, observing a number of people with dementia over a period of time and recording information about their experience of care, analysing and interpreting the data and then feeding it back to staff. This information is then used to draw up an action plan to bring about change and improvements.
DCM has also been used as a focus for staff training and development and as an aid to care planning. It is increasingly being used internationally with people from 24 countries trained in the method worldwide. DCM is a complex and powerful tool and for this reason training in the method is only available from Bradford Dementia Group approved trainers who have undergone a rigorous preparation for this role.
This is an intensive course run over four days which equips participants to use DCM within their own organisation or workplace. It covers the underlying philosophy or person-centred care, the four coding frames used in DCM, the rules governing coding, processing of the data and practical issues around briefing and feeding back to care staff. Participants take a formal test under exam conditions on the final day of the course (pass mark 60%) to ensure their competence is using the tool. Those successfully completing this receive a University of Bradford certificate recording their status as a Basic User of the method.
Each course costs £630 per place inclusive of lunches, refreshments, Course Dinner on first evening and course materials. The fee does not include dinner on the second or third evenings, or overnight accommodation. A number of bedrooms with en-suite facilities are available at Heaton Mount at an additional cost of £215 for 3 nights or £291 for four nights. These rates include buffet evening meals. Student numbers are strictly limited to 30 places for this course.

Learning to Use DCM allows four days for participants to become thoroughly familiar with the person-centred approach, and the DCM method and background theory, so as to build up confidence in applying it. There will be a written test taken under exam conditions on the final day, for which participants must bring a calculator. Participants who successfully complete the test (pass mark 60%) receive a University of Bradford Certificate recording their status as a Basic User of the DCM method.
The Dementia Care Mapping Update Day is a one-day short course study day, available for participants who have successfully completed a Learning to Use Dementia Care Mapping course.
It has been specifically designed for those mappers who have had limited opportunity to practise DCM on a regular basis, and require further support to update and consolidate their knowledge, confidence and competence in the use of the DCM tool.
The DCM Update Day costs £170 inclusive of lunch, refreshments and course materials. Student numbers are strictly limited to a maximum of 16 for this course.

Cancellations must be made in writing (faxes and emails accepted) to Events Bradford. For places cancelled by the Tuesday four weeks before the start of the course, the full course fee and any accommodation charge will be refunded. Between the following Wednesday and the second Tuesday before the course, inclusive, a charge of 50% of the fee and accommodation cost will be made. After that day, or for non-attendance, the full amount will be payable.
