Jean-François Hennart BRADFORD CENTRE IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS - ANNUAL LECTURE

Wednesday, 25 November 2009, Samuel Lister Theatre, 2pm (refreshments from 1:30pm)

"Not so Fast! Why we should not close the book on the theory of the multinational enterprise"

Jean-François Hennart (CentER and Department of Organization and Strategy, Tilburg University)

In his fascinating talk at the BCIB, Jean-Francois Hennart argued that further work is required to provide a coherent theoretical framework for explaining Multinational Enterprises. He explained why the versions of the theory of the Multinational Enterprise that are based on the OLI paradigm and on naïve versions on internalization theory contain some crucial errors, and why the newer versions based on resource or knowledge-based views are even more problematic. He suggested that researchers move beyond “MNE-centric” explanations of the MNE and take into account the efficiency of markets for assets that firms aim to access when expanding internationally.

Rudolf Sinkovics BRADFORD CENTRE IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS - SEMINAR

Wednesday, 2 December, 2009, Kempner room, Heaton Mount, 2pm

"Multilingual elite-interviews and software-based analysis - Problems and solutions based on CAQDAS"

Rudolf Sinkovics (Manchester Business School)

Rudolf Sinkovics argued that multilingual interviews with corporate elites are increasingly important in terms of obtaining accurate accounts of strategic decisions and long-term business perspectives. Hence, language would play a critical role in the research process. However, as Sinkovics argued in his talk, the practice of qualitative data-collection and analysis has not been addressed sufficiently against the background of new and innovative software-based tools. In his presentation, he outlined the conceptual challenges in setting up qualitative projects when interviewing corporate elites and discussed practical implementation issues in terms of computer assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS).
