The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor John Godward, is hosting a civic reception at City Hall on Wednesday, 21 October, 2009, to welcome new international students from the University of Bradford to the City.
The University has been welcoming international students to its campuses for more than 40 years and this year is no exception. With over 2,500 students from 110 countries around the world, which represent just over 20% of the student population undertaking undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses, Bradford council and the University are taking this opportunity to show their firm commitment to confronting inequality and celebrating diversity.
Director of the International Office, Dr. Haydn Bartlett said, "At the University there is a diverse mix of people from different backgrounds, faiths, nationalities and ages all sharing the closely-knit city centre campus. International students continue to bring vibrancy and diversity not only to the University but the city too and significantly contribute to the economic wellbeing of many local businesses.
"This is a great opportunity for the students to be formally welcomed by the Lord Mayor and senior members from the University whilst enjoying the traditional English tea and buns. It is also a good opportunity for all international and EU students to tour around the City Hall and learn about the history of the building and of course, to meet up with the fellow students at the University."
The civic reception will give students from across the world a chance to meet the Lord Mayor, local Councillors' as well as staff and current students from the University.
The Lord Mayor will be welcoming international students to the City of Bradford with an afternoon tea followed by a guided tour of City Hall.
