    Green Accolade for Ecoversity

    22 October 09

The University of Bradford has been acclaimed as the leading 'Green' University at a national Awards Ceremony.

The Times Higher Award for 'Outstanding Contribution to Sustainable Development' was awarded last week at a gala dinner in London attended by over 1200 university leaders.

The award for Ecoversity, the University's 'Green Programme', was based on the commitment and progress made over the past three years across the institution.  This included sustainable campus regeneration, education for sustainable development within the curriculum, student and staff engagement and wider cultural change.

The judges picked out specific reference to the work on embedding sustainable development into the learning of all students, pro-active carbon management and an innovative approach to involving staff and students across the institution.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Geoff Layer, said:  "We are delighted to have received recognition from the University sector for our work.  We have made a start on our own sustainability journey and realise that we still have much to do."

This award builds on other recent successes where the Ecoversity team have been recognised for their work and commitment.  Ecoversity recently won a prestigious sector Green Gown award, as the University with the most improved environmental performance improvement over the past five years.  They have also been named as best new entrant to the Business in the Community Environment Index and also flagged as sector leader, in education for sustainable development, in the National Business in the Community Corporate Social Responsibility Index.

The University is currently finalising a new building deign to achieve the first BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) 'outstanding' accreditation for sustainable construction in the university sector and looking to be a sector leader in carbon reduction.

    Notes to Editors

The Ecoversity Programme aims to embed the principles and practice of sustainable development across the entire institution by getting people involved, taking the lead on issues, and encouraging and making it easier for people to adopt sustainable behaviours and lifestyles.
